Boot Camp For Terribly Twisted Teens [Chapter 28] Make Overs Are Suppose To Be Fun
We drove the Enclave to the gas station, mostly for the bathroom, we all waited while Nick went and got the key. Inside the bathroom, which was shockingly pretty clean all things considering, thought it smelled like something was rotting. We would be doing our make overs there. I read some of the graffiti while the twins were bent over the sinks and Hiro and J.C were dying their hair. I didn’t know what colour.
I read more profane things, more things about someone’s mother, and discovered ‘Sally May’ was surely hated by someone considering the long disgusting note about her. Nick re-entered the bathroom and I turned to him with a stony face. “Where were you.”
“I was checking my messages, I figured if these people had told my boss something there might be a get well message, or maybe the nothingness would be a sign in itself. I mean if no one notified them, then they’d obviously call wondering why I didn’t show up for work. Right?” I nodded, “anyways, there was only one message, guess from who?”
“I have no idea,” I admitted, then venturing a guess, “Sargent Joe Kelp?” I asked recalling the guy who had called my dad many a night after my being arrested.
“No, my cousin Liam.”
“Woah, woah, woah, Liam is your cousin? How did I never know?”
Nick shrugged, “he moved, we didn’t hang out as much, when I moved it was even further. We would like email and stuff, but we just didn’t really talk anymore.”
“So he’s looking for you?”
“I called him back, he was worried, someone claiming to be my doctor called his mom and told them that I had to be quarantined from some new disease, and they would keep them updated on my condition, only Liam didn’t believe it so he called me. He thought it had something to do with my powers.”
“He knows about them!”
“I told him when we were younger, he was cool about it, and like I said, we were closer back then. I told him where we’d be around tomorrow, he said he’d meet us there with his savings.”
“That’s nice of him,” I smiled.
Nick sighed, “I hate taking his savings like this, but we’re going to need all the help we can get.”
“By taking his help, aren’t we endangering him?”
“He understands that, I tried to tell him not to come, but he wouldn’t listen, said if I didn’t let him help, he’d dig more, which could be much more dangerous than having a meet, taking money and leaving.”
I nodded, “I guess so.”
The twins had their hair up in clear shower caps. More and more people got their hair dyed. I got out the scissors and started cutting Anna’s hair while J.C cut Mary’s. Anna’s hair colour was now a golden blonde. I gave her blunt bangs just below her eyebrows (which she’d also dyed) and cut the ends straight keeping it long. Mary’s hair was now a rusty red, J.C cut her hair to be even with the girls shoulders, and gave angled bangs over the one eye. The twins looked quite different, but we weren’t done yet, I gave Anna a smoky eye, while J.C layered on the eyeliner. They went into the stalls to get dressed. Anna came out in a three quarter length, v-neck, deep blue shirt and a pair of black skinny jeans, she’d chosen a pair of black ankle length boots to complete. Mary exited in a dark grey sweater with sleeves a bit took long covering to her knuckles, and dark blue boot cut jeans with the same boots Anna had chosen, only in a dark brown. The twins no longer looked like twins.
The guys make overs were least impressive, they mostly look the same, they all had nearly the same pair of light wash blue jeans, only Thayne and Leon went for dark wash. Most had gone with short sleeved shirts, and a hoody as their second item. Nick was wearing a black turtle neck, most of the rest were just wearing plain t-shirts in various shades of black, grey, or green. They had all chose running shoes, though there really hadn’t been a lot of options for them.
Nick’s light blonde hair had gone a dark brown. Thayne’s was died a light brown. Leon, and Hiro went blonde. Hawkeye went to a dark brown. Rick dyed his hair a dark brown and cut it short, he looked miserable. Scott bleached his nearly white. None of them looked to happy.
J.C went with black hair and I cut it short as she asked and it ended up a cute pixi cut.
Finally it was my turn. Nick helped me out, knowing how attached I was, I knew he wasn’t trying to hurt me with this, this was something that needed to be done. I still didn’t know what bottle I had grabbed.
I had a bit of a panic attack when it came time to rinse and all I seen in the sink was black swirls. “Oh God!” I shrieked.
“It’s okay hon.” I heard J.C’s comforting voice. “It’s just colour. It’ll grow out.”
Rinsed dried and black hair. I stared in the mirror with a stony face. I’d picked out black. With the dark hair I looked incredibly pale. I looked dead. I looked like the things in my waking nightmares. The ghosts that linger, I looked like one of them. Tears started falling. “It’s just hair,” Mary said gruffly, “get over it.”
“Be nice!” Anna scolded.
I cried harder into Nick’s chest, “I keep remembering this picture I seen.” He pulled me back so he could hear me since I was mumbling into his chest. I sniffled, “when I first seen the dead, I googled it... this picture came up, this scary, deathly pale girl, black long hair, she looked like death. It was named Necromancer. She’s what I look like now.” I shook my head.
I knew it was childish.
It was only a picture.
It was only hair colour.
J.C was right, it would fade, my hair would grow back blonde. My sadness turned to anger, why was I the only one upset, why was I the only one hurting about the change, why couldn’t I be more flexible, why couldn’t I be brave, take one for the team?
I rubbed my temples, “sorry.”
“It’s okay,” Nick responded.
A foggy whisper came though I couldn’t make out the words.
I turned a full circle, and saw no one but my friends, though I knew it wasn’t their voice. It was too foggy, to distant, like it was behind a wall or something. “Uh... Claire?” Hiro finally asked after my second circle around.
“I... heard something.”
“What kind of something?” Rick asked.
“The I don’t know something...” I muttered, “grumbling... I couldn’t hear it clearly.”
Mary scoffed, “you’re just trying to get out of having your hair cut.”
“No I’m not,” I argued, “I heard something.”
“Bull shit,” Mary muttered.
“Shove your attitude!” I yelled at her, “I said I heard something, that means I heard something.
“Watch your fucking attitude with me princess!” Mary yelled back taking a few quick steps forward slapping me before anyone realized her intentions. “News flash, this isn’t cushy home. This isn’t happy spa time, this is cut your fucking hair, or I’ll do it for you.” I could hear underlying threats.
“Fuck you!” I screamed at her, “you are un-fucking-believable! You’re always miserable to be around. Always negative, it’s not what we need right now!”
“Listen you little bitch!” Mary yelled her hands in fists, mine were also at my side balled up, my nails biting into my palms.
“No you fucking listen!”
All of a sudden a bunch of things happened at once.
One, a corpse jumped down from the ceiling (where I don’t want to think about how long it had been stuffed there, not long by the look of the decomposition and maggots wiggling under the flesh) apparently Mary had attached her mind to it since it was facing me.
Two, I latched to the shadows and they started to swirl around me.
Three, the spirit finally got through the barrier and was yelling in my ear, “get out! RUN! Get out of here!”
Four, with one glance at the spirit, I could tell it was the poor soul of the empty corpse Mary was controlling, and it was blocking the only exit
Five, I could smell something burning.
