Night Children [Chapter Eighty] Daughter
“Griever, it’s me...” Alana whispered, though we all knew he would hear it.
“Alana,” he questioned. He looked down at himself. Studied his hands like he’d never seen himself before. “What happened?”
I let out a breath that I’d been holding, worried what we raised wasn’t Griever. It was, just he was very confused, rightfully so. Being awoken buried under six feet of dirt couldn’t have been a pleasant experience.
“We resurrected you,” she responded taking a tentative step forward.
He put his hands over his ears as a tortured look struck his face, “all I can hear is their heartbeats.”
“You just need to hunt,” Alana said taking a few more slow steps. “I’ll go with you.” She finally reached him and placed her hands over his. She looked back at us, “get Helena inside.”
I nodded and Viktor and I walked back to the mansion I resided in. Still I couldn’t bring myself to call it home. Home was still the castle, filled with pale people walking silently, still the heckling of the Blood Brigade, the comradery of the Daylight and Twilight Guardians. I missed home.
“How do you think your father is doing, coming out of retirement so early?” I asked.
“Oh you know, probably savagely devouring small children,” noticing my shocked look he continued, “I just mean I’ve made it so everyone has to eat animals, not only are they not happy about it, but my father has the power to reverse it as long as I’m gone. He’ll ruin all I’ve done.”
“We’ll get back their soon,” I said.
“Really?” He asked, “we should have been back a while ago.”
“Things came up.”
“I know, I just fear of what imbalance my father could cause while I’m gone. We have a truce now, we’ve worked hard for this. I don’t want to see it all go to waste.”
I touched his arm tentatively, he was carrying Helena carefully, “will she be okay?” I asked.
“She will be fine, he just took more than he should of, it’ll replenish in a couple of hours.”
Instead of responding aloud, I simply nodded. We walked into the mansion in silence. When we entered the room, Markus was at our side in an instant taking Helena from Viktor’s arms carefully but quickly, “she’s okay,” Viktor said quietly.
“And is Griever?” I turned to see my father.
Glaring, I responded, “he’s fine, just hungry.”
“I can see he got a meal already,” his voice malicious as he looked at my neck which I touched carefully. I could feel the crust of dry blood caking my neck. “At least Markus got the children out of there.” I looked across the room to where Alaric and Adeline were sitting on a bed studying us with their inquisitive silver eyes.
“He didn’t harm me.”
“Sure, I’m sure those bites felt good.”
“What are you implying?” I noticed that Colleen was in the room, tending to Helena. She whispered something to Markus, put a cool cloth on Helena’s forehead then walked over to my children.
“I know what the life of the Night Child does to a human, especially a female one.”
Colleen, holding hands with each Adeline and Alaric she lead them from the room with promise of some treats. I was thankful. It was bad enough they seen me fight with my father once, I didn’t want it to happen a second time.
“Really, because you were a Night Child’s lap dog for a long while.”
“Like I had a choice, I had to consider your mother in all of this.”
“But never had to consider me!” I shouted.
My father’s eye roll made my stomach ache, “of course I did Evan, that’s not what I mean.”
“Really, and what do you mean? And what are you implying with this ‘female one.’”
“Take a look, they find out you’re female, and now you’re mated with one of them!”
“That’s more than enough,” Viktor said interfering. “You should speak with a little more respect,” he said glaring at my father.
“Don’t you dare tell me how to talk to my son.”
“Daughter,” I screamed, “I am your daughter! However I may now wish it wasn’t so! How was I so cursed to be brought into this world by you! You who can’t even fathom that I might be in love, how you can love and cherish your grandchildren but you can’t love me! You’re just angry because I have Viktor, and will for eternity, while you are destined to walk the world alone from now on because mom is dead.”
He went to slap me but Viktor’s hand caught his arm, “don’t you dare think about touching her again.” My father ripped his arm away and stormed out of the room.
“I can’t fucking believe him anymore!”
“He’s alone.”
Crossing my arms over my chest I silently fumed. Viktor stepped behind me and wrapped his arms around mine and held me tight back to chest his nuzzled my neck and I let out a sigh the weight of the argument falling from my shoulders as he planted tiny kisses down my neck.
“W-what happened?”
I turned to see Helena was slowly sitting up. Slowly, I walked out of Viktor’s embrace and approached her. “Griever drank from you, a bit to much, be careful sitting up, okay?”
She nodded, “I’m parched.”
Markus grabbed a glass of water from the table and handed it to her, she thanked him. “Colleen thought of it,” he said slowly, “she’s a lot better at remembering human needs than I am.”
Helena grinned at him after taking a sip, “you do just fine.” She then turned to me, “how is Griever.”
“Still hungry, Alana took him hunting in the woods for some animals.”
She nodded, “where is everyone else.”
“The twins are having something to eat with Colleen and Seth. Lukas is in his room.”
“Your father?” I shrugged in response. “The sun will be rising soon,” she said off handedly.
“Yes, it will,” Markus responded taking the empty glass from her, “would you like more?”
“If it isn’t too much of a bother...” Markus snorted back laugher and said he’d be right back. “Everything is going to get back to normal now isn’t it?” She asked me in a whisper.
I looked to Viktor, we’d be going back to the castle soon. “Yes. Everything will be back to normal soon.”
