Night Children [Chapter Seventy Nine] Griever
There was no air.
No light.
The earth was moist, dewy, cold, and smelly.
The panic though was overwhelming, no air, no light, buried alive!
Nothing could be worse.
And so he dug.
We waited.
The silence was deafening. Breathing was the only sound, laboured in the cold, in the panic. Alaric and Adeline stood behind Viktor and I. Peering over my shoulder I seen they were holding hands, Alaric had a hold on my pant leg, while Adeline had a grip on her fathers. Viktor and I were also holding hands, I squeezed knowing it wouldn’t hurt him but would instead let him know how worried I was.
He looked over at me and nuzzled my neck. On most cases it would make me instantly forget all problems, any worries or fears. Instead I only felt a mild comfort in the fact that he was there with me. I could see Alana, staring down at the dark blood laced dirt before her. “How long does it take?” I asked.
“I don’t know,” Viktor responded, “but apparently a lot of what I thought I knew was false.”
He drew back from me, still I missed the mild comfort in his touch despite that it did little for me. I looked back over my shoulder, despite the grip on my pants I kept needing to check on them. On my other side was Markus and Helena, she was standing leaning back against his chest, his arms wrapped protectively around her stomach. Helena caught my eye and passed on a worried look. I looked down since I could offer no comfort.
The dirt started to move suddenly and everyone grew stiff with worry. Viktor let go of my hand and instinctively crouched, ready to pounce if need be. I turned to my children kneeling in front of them quickly kissing them both on the cheek. “You go with Helena and Markus if anything bad happens, understand?”
Adeline chewed her bottom lip and Alaric wouldn’t look me in the eye as they both agreed. I didn’t have time to make it more clear to them as I turned around, dirt was being moved aside, a hand thrust through the last bit of dirt and clamped down on the solid earth.
Alana still was kneeling at the head of the grave, her breathing was hitched up in speed, her panic was shared with everyone. Not one of us wasn’t watching wide eyed, tensed up and breathing quick.
Head and torso out and I stepped forward, Viktor grabbed my arm and I quickly shook loose taking a few more cautious steps forward. Alana stood and took my hand looking at me with wide eyes hazy with tears unable to be shed. Griever was pulling his bottom half out, I looked over my shoulder as I noticed sudden extra shadow over me.
Viktor stood at my side, and I looked past him to see Alaric and Adeline had Markus and Helena in front of them. Helena standing back a few steps, while Markus was crouched a few feet ahead.
I turned my attention back to Griever. Viktor was crouched, Alana took up no defensive position. I grabbed a dagger from my side and held it in a white knuckled hand. We stood there as Griever slowly worked his way into a standing position. I could hear his bones still snapping into place, and I could bet the healing was painful.
“Griever, baby...” Alana took a shaky step forward but I grabbed her arm, unsure of what he would do. Though honestly if Griever wasn’t himself, she wouldn’t be long for this world after we had to kill him. There was simply no surviving it for her. She’d been alive so long, in love so little and so hopelessly smitten she’d never let him go. I knew that.
Still, I knew Griever was the fastest Night Child I’d ever met. I should have been expecting the speed, still it was unparallel to even what he use to be able to do. I jerked Alana back and tried to protect her but his hand grasped my arm and pulled me to his body. The sudden jostle made me let go of the dagger and it sunk into the freshly dug up ground. His fangs were in my neck in a nanosecond drinking me quicker than any Night Child ever had.
A echoing growl ripped through the air and I immediately knew it was Viktor, still he couldn’t rip me back or push him away for it would mean having my throat ripped open by Griever’s fangs.
I willed the purple haze to my hand and hit him in the side with it. He howled letting go of my neck and I fell back into Viktor’s awaiting arms. He held me tight touching my neck, my bite marks.
“Griever,” the condescending voice of Alana rang through the air. He was crouched to attack, his eyes set on Helena but at the sound of Alana’s voice he froze instead of pouncing like I thought he would.
“He’s starving,” I said as it dawned on me, “that’s why he bit me, while he’s looking at Helena, we still have blood moving. Markus, get Adeline and Alaric out of here!”
Markus looked to Viktor for confirmation. Viktor nodded and Markus walked backward grabbing the children and dashing back to the house. Helena now stood, black mist swirling around her hands. “He can take from me,” Helena offered, “is he in control?”
I looked to Griever who had not moved since Alana said his name, “as good as it’s going to get,” Alana said slowly.
Helena took a few steps forward and I walked with her, he grabbed Helena quickly like he had to me. He held her close to his body as he sank his fangs into her neck.
She let out a gasp of shock which gave way to a whimper and then to a moan. Alana’s hands were clenched into fists upon hearing the sound. Helena’s knees started to shake and I looked to Alana, “Griever, stop!”
I could see the bloodthirsty red eyes glowing in firelight turn slowly toward Alana. “Griever, stop.” I ordered next. His eyes slowly went to me and peered at me half his face hidden by Helena’s thick waves.
He then looked at Viktor who had been growling instinctively since Griever had bitten me and hadn’t calmed down. Griever slowly removed his fangs and Viktor caught Helena’s unconscious body before she hit the ground.
Griever stared at us with wide red eyes, he looked confused. Alana startled him as she moved forward quickly and in a blink he was back at the edge of the forest. “Griever?” She questioned aloud. “Don’t you know who we are?” I could feel the fear rolling off her.
He stared at all of us with red eyes and stayed silent.
Somehow I didn’t have a good feeling.
