"What is taking him so long?" Kali wondered out loud. Her real name was a secret, and she wouldn't be sharing it, not even with the man to whom she'd been taking orders from for the better part of two years. She was a secret agent, as was he, and the third and only other surviving member after the clusterfuck that was the Nepal Mission. Four dead, all theirs.
Code-name McKenna shrugged his broad shoulders, and though he'd never say so, she knew that McKenna and Nickolai were brothers, they had the same height, broad features, same eyes, nose and mouth, Nickolai's hair was close cropped, while McKenna's was kept back in a ponytail.
McKenna had assured them both this was going to be an easy mission. Kali, code named after the Hindu Goddess of destruction, and for good reason, was working communications, but Nickolai's reception had gone out, like they thought it would, when he reached the center of the compound. "Take off your worry face," McKenna told her with a light hearted grin, "he's a big boy, he can take care of himself. There are only two guards on the entire compound, Intel says so."
Kali rolled her eyes angrily, their own intelligence agent had been one of the victims in Nepal. Now they had to trust one of the agents who sat in a safe little bubble the government hid and hope they didn't screw it up. "They've never even been in battle, they don't have any idea what is at stake." Kali had been dead set against Nickolai going in alone, but he had insisted. Easy, he had said.
"Back," Kali let out a shaky breath of relief, when she heard his bug come back online.
"Hurry up, I could have been back already," Kali said with a light laugh.
"See, told you so," McKenna said. No sooner were the words out of his mouth was there gunfire.
"Nick?" Kali shouted into her com. "Nickolai!"
"AMBUSH, GET OUT."
Kali was already out of the van, McKenna, their driver for the mission was out his door in a second. "I'm not leaving with out you Nick!"
McKenna grabbed her. "Stop." He told her, "Nick, Odds?"
"GO! Too many! There's a bomb."
"We have to go," McKenna insisted.
Kali thrashed in his arms, "no." She whipped his arm around and kicked out his knee, pulled the gun from the back of his pants and pistol whipped the back of his head. She shoved him in the back of the van and slammed the door.
"Timer or button?" Kali wanted to know as she ran forward her heart slamming in her chest.
"KALI, GO! Don't you dare think about coming here! Go okay, go."
"I can't, I can't leave you."
"Protect them, love them, tell them about me okay?" Nickolai's voice was raised over the gunfire. "Get out of here."
She was still running toward the compound. Her legs taking her, she hoped, hell she prayed to a God she had long since stopped believing in.
BOOM
"Hey, hey, there you are. Careful, don't move too much."
"McKenna?" Kali's throat was dry, cracked and aching while speaking.
"Yeah it's me."
"Nickolai?"
McKenna's baby blue eyes misted over as he looked away, "didn't make it." An awful sound escaped her lips and her hands instinctively went to her stomach. "You didn't tell me."
"Nickolai wanted to... tell you when this mission was over." Kali responded gasping for air her sobs wreaking havoc.
McKenna's hands went over the ones she had placed over her stomach. "The twins didn't make it either."
I think that killed me. I may not have loved Nickolai, I mean, I loved him, in a sense. We didn't have children out of love... we just kind of... went to each other after the clusterfuck of Nepal. The children were our ticket to a normal life. I had, for a second, wanted that house, yard, kids, man. The dream had only lived in me for a month, but it had festered and to have it stripped from me killed me.
"You'll be okay."
"I'll never be okay again."
((really random, big action-y, heartbreaking, sequence of events I had to write so it would stop playing in my head, it's shitty because I wrote it quick and yes I did switch perspectives for the third last paragraph.))
