//We Run This Town//Chapter 014// Soul Crushing
The punch tasted cheap. I flopped into a plastic folding chair miserably. Matteo managed to thoroughly confuse me. Lucia was still dancing with Sergio, Blaire was off somewhere with Linden, and Gemma hadn’t been seen since her little freak out. I took another sip of the cheap punch before putting the plastic cup on the table and pushing it away slightly.
Kaper seemed more than happy to be dancing with Gavin. The boys on the football team were rather close to them with their own dates, like Kaper was one of the footballer’s girlfriends and that was some form of club all on it’s own. The girls spoke to her and she laughed. “You a lesbian?”
I whipped around to see Gemma who flopped down next to me. “No,” I respond shocked that she would even ask me such a thing.
“Well you asked about Kaper earlier, and now you’re staring at her,” Gemma shrugged. “It’s okay if you are you know.”
I turned to Gemma and looked her right in the eyes. “I’m definitely crushing on Kaper.” I kept my face as straight as possible for about five seconds before I snorted and broke out into full out laughter. “I’m not a lesbian Gemma, I like boys, I just happened to be staring off that way when I was thinking about something, I’m not crushing on Kaper.” I assured her, unspoken though was that I was crushing on Kaper’s date.
The night got better now that Gemma had cooled off. October and Kaper along with their dates were hanging out with Lexie and her date- Darren. Blaire eventually re-joined us, Linden had gone off to get her a drink. “Hows it going?” I asked her and Lucia came over sitting back down beside her.
“Good, really good,” Blaire responds happily twisting her long hair around her fingers, “he’s really sweet!” Linden came over and put a cup down in front of Blaire and she looked up at him with a smile, “thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” he responds with a sweet smile sitting down next to her, and in no time Blaire is sitting on his lap snuggling into his chest, not that he seemed to mind.
The song changed from fast to slow and I grab Gemma’s arm. “This is a dance right? What are we sitting around for?” I ask and she follows me Lucia tailing behind her, leaving the lovebirds alone at the table. We took the centre floor, which was close to October, Kaper, Lexie, along with their dates Riley, Gavin and Darren respectively. Part of me wanted to show Lexie I wasn’t content with being in the backdrop, I wouldn’t fear centre stage because it was near her. I tried convincing myself it was the only reason, but in being truthful, I wanted Gavin to see me, I wanted him to notice me.
I ended up getting my wish, just not in the way I had hoped.
Gemma, Lucia and I danced together having a really great time. Gemma sang loudly to all the songs she knew the words too. Lucia had a grace about her, she always had been a beautiful dancer. I danced wildly, sang a little off-key, and that was okay, I was having a really good time. Gemma kept her back to her enemies, so she wouldn’t have to look at their faces. I stood across from her and Lucia was to our side. I could see Gavin from where I was standing, so I seen when Maximo plowed between Gavin and Riley earning him glares from both, but Maximo came directly between Gemma and Lucia to grab my arm dragging me back the way we came.
“Maximo! What’s going on?”
“Maximo!” Gemma shouted and eventually she and Lucia caught up with us grabbing Maximo’s arm stopping the two of us right in the middle of enemy territory. “What the fuck!”
Maximo looked to me, and then to Gemma before whispering something to Lucia instead. Lucia put her hand over her mouth like it would stop Gemma and I from hearing her gasp in horror. “Lucia, stay with Gemma, take her to the front entrance, Preston will be there to pick her up. Got that?”
“Max,” I whimpered grabbing his sleeve like a child and tugging on it he looked down at me. “What is going on.” I didn’t ask this time. I demanded.
“Come on, we need to get to the-“
“Get to where Lombardi?” Darren asked.
Maximo scowled before turning to Lucia, “take her now.”
Lucia nodded dutifully and she took Gemma’s arm gently, “come on, please.” Lucia whispered, she wasn’t one for conflict. Sure Gemma wanted to know what was going on, but Lucia was like the little sister of our group, protecting her came first. Gemma nodded and went with her.
Maximo made sure they got through the crowd before turning back to Darren who’d stepped directly into our path, “out of my way.”
“Max,” I looked around, “where’s Serge, are we getting Serge?”
“Shh, it’s going to be okay,” he comforted me before I even knew what I was being comforted for. Panic built inside of me. “Darren, get the fuck out of my way, or I swear to God I will fucking move you.”
“What are you going to do Lombardi?” Darren asked stepping right up on my brother, “going to punch me? Huh? You don’t think my father won’t find some more cause to keep you locked up? You already have a few things on your record don’t you?”
I grabbed tight to Darren’s arm and transferred my weight to my left leg and pulled him back throwing him off balance and he staggered back an extra few steps. I stood in front of my eldest brother now. “What is going on, where are we going?” Panic edged my voice and Maximo sighed. He pulled me close to him holding me in a hug and whispered into my ear four words that shocked me to my core. Four words that scared me beyond all reason. Four words that had me screaming in pain grasping onto Maximo as if he were my lifeline.
“Sergio has been stabbed.”
