//We Run This Town//Chapter 006//The Football Team
Mrs. Wetherill starts her lecture and I scramble to take notes as fast as I can. I’m not even positive what she is talking about and I’m sure I’ll have to spend hours deciphering my own notes to be able to read them and the shaky diagrams. The class is given handouts. I quickly get to work looking for the answers in our newly assigned textbooks. I make numerous mistakes and the eraser at the end of my pencil is already down to the metal. Unzipping my pencil case and scouring around I realize I neglected to pack my new eraser and all my other pencils are in my locker.
I turn to my neighbor and tap his shoulder and whisper, “do you have an eraser I could borrow?”
He turns to me and I tilt my head. He’s familiar, and I realize I must have gone to middle school with him, but I can’t pick his name out of my brain. He looks at me, studying my face and then looking at the pink eraser shards all over my desk and he smiles. “Science not your subject?”
I fell my cheeks heat up and I look down hoping my shaggy brunette lock covers some of my embarrassment, “it’s not my favourite thing in the world.” Other people in the class were working together, I looked up at the teacher who was reading a romance novel, apparently not caring as long as everyone kept it quiet. I look at his sheet, “you seem to get it.”
He shrugs, “I’m not bad.”
“Mind maybe explaining a few things to me?” I ask.
“Sure.” He ended up spending the entire class explaining the lecture to me and didn’t seem to get annoyed when I would interrupt with more questions.
The bell rang and the announcement for football tryouts came on. “Sorry, got to run!” He darts out of the room before I even have a chance to thank him or ask his name.
I get to my locker and leave my binders and grab my lunch. I meet Blaire and Gemma as I come down the stairs and Blaire texts Lucia that we’ll be sitting outside on the bleachers. Of course, they wanted to check out they guys on football practice.
“Linden Wood really filled out over the summer,” Blaire says with a grin on her face. “I mean, damn.”
Lucia comes around the corner of the school and steps up onto the bleachers with us, “who filled out?”
“Linden Wood,” Blaire repeats as she points him out for Lucia.
“Snap, he’s hot.”
“Dibs!” Blaire shouts with a grin on her face.
Lucia rolls her eyes, “whatever.”
“Hey Blaire?” Gemma nods her head toward the field, “what about Riley Rosenburg?”
“Which one is he?” Blaire asks.
“The one who’s about to take of his sweaty shirt,” Gemma responds taking a sip of her iced green tea. Blaire wolf whistles and we all giggle. “Damn, anyone want a six pack?”
“That guy’s in my science class,” I point toward the handsome teen. “Helped me out, who is he?”
Blaire looks at me then to the field than to Gemma. Gemma looks shocked and then turns to me, “you don’t know who he is?”
I feel my eyebrows draw closer together, “should I?”
“That is Gavin Burke. Son of the man who put our fathers in prison.” Gemma responds sharply her jaw jutting out as she tosses her sandwich down in it’s container and snapping the lid on it. “So don’t even think about getting sweet on him.”
“I wasn’t, he just helped me in class,” I defend myself. “I didn’t even know his name.”
“He is cute,” Blaire whispers, earning her a glare from Gemma and I. “Sorry, he is.”
“I didn’t mean anything by it Gemma, I didn’t know.”
Gemma sighs, “I know you didn’t. I just can’t stand that we have to go to school with him, or those evil Reid bitches, or that fucking McCauley jackass.” The McCauley’s had moved into Rochester because Geoff McCauley was going to be an investigator on my father’s case. I was a little surprised to hear they were still here.
“You should ease up on the swearing,” Lucia notes. Gemma turns and glares and Lucia throws her hands up in defence, “I’m just saying.”
“I need to get a book out from the library, see you guys later.” Gemma packs her things and leaves quickly leaving with an air of rage surrounding her.
Lucia lets out a sigh and Blaire looks a little shocked, her carrot swimming in the container of dip she has in her hand. “Wow,” Blaire finally mutters as she tries to get the carrot out with out getting her fingers in the dip. “That was bordering on frightening.”
“Yup,” I respond. Gemma Fia Lombardi could be damn frightening when she wanted to be. I could see her going into the business when she gets to be old enough. “So who else is on the team?” I ask and Blaire smiles, boy talk is defiantly her forte.
Blaire points, “that there is Pierre Wood, Linden’s younger brother.” Pierre and his brother looked very similar from this distance, both built, spikes of brown hair though Linden was a good foot taller than his younger brother. “And that,” Blaire points further down the field to a fast moving Japanese student. “That is Ohiko Cho, he’s in our grade, insanely smart, and good at like every sport in existence. His parents are stinkin’ rich too.” Blaire leans forward trying to see better, “the one in the number six jersey is Darren McCauley, super cute, but obviously, completely off limits. He and Gavin are best friends, and both are complete playboys. Then again, the entire football team always is filled with guys like them... egotistical.”
“Stereotyping is wrong,” Lucia says offhandedly as she puts her containers back into her lunch bag carefully. It was when she said things like that, that I just knew deep down she wouldn’t be part of the business when she got her choice. She’s too soft hearted for the job.
“Not if it’s true,” Blaire argues. She points again, “that there is Brian Wetherill, he’s the science teacher’s grandson.” All of them were called together by the coach, “and there is Sergio, I didn’t know your brother would try out.” I gave a shrug. Neither of my brother’s were particularly in the ‘jock’ stereo type, but they did enjoy their contact sports, probably in relation to our upbringing.
I look to the huddle and caught sight of Maximo, “didn’t know Max was going to try out either.”
“They are the athletic ones,” Lucia quipped giving me a nudge in the ribs and we both laugh.
“Know anyone else?” I ask.
Blaire shook her head, “it’s a huge school, you expect me to know everyone?” I shook my head and the warning bell went. “Come on, class time is upon us again.”
