Boot Camp For Terribly Twisted Teens [Chapter 45] The Aftermath
The explosion was magnificent. Cleansing. Beautiful. Deadly.
“Holy shit!”
“You can say that again.”
“Holy fucking shit.”
“Got it the first time.”
“It’s way different to see it in reality okay,” Rick replied sharply.
“Is the effect the same?” Hawkeye asked.
“It might be the chip, but I can’t see anyone.”
“Son-of-a-bitch!” Mary kicked a tire of the truck. Anna touched her sisters shoulder lightly, but Mary shrugged her off.
“Mary...”
“We were too late,” Mary responded sharply.
“No, no, I won’t accept that,” Tori responded. “Claire is in there, we’ve been best friends since childhood, she’s my family, she’s all I got left.” Tori broke down tears flooding, falling down her face.
“What do we do now?” Hawkeye asked Rick and his voice breaking midway through his sentence.
Rick was quite for a moment. “I don’t know... I can’t see anything.”
“What the hell does that mean?” Mary screamed.
“It happened before, with Scott, right before he died. I can’t see futures if we don’t have any.”
“Son of a whore!” Mary screamed bashing both of her fists against the steel of the armoured truck they took from the Carlin Institute. “So we’re all dead.”
Rick shrugged, “I don’t know, I’m flying blind for the first time since I was twelve here okay.”
Anna started duplicating, the duplicates started walking around worriedly. “At least if something is going to start shooting at us, I hope it’s one of the duplicates that get it.”
“So what do we do?” Mary asked. “Do we drive away, do we check the wreckage? Do we go back to the Carlin Institute? Do we run as far as we can as fast as we can? Do we split up or stay together? What the hell do we do?”
“Hawk, can you see anything in the wreckage?” Rick asked.
Hawkeye sighed before he turned and took a few steps out of the crowd and concentrated. “There is a shit ton of fire. Smaller explosions going on inside of it, whatever combustibles they had in there are blowing up.” He paused as he searched through the wreckage with his impeccable sight. “There are bodies. I don’t know if they are friend or foe, but they are outside, blown away from the building. None of them are moving.”
“Can’t you tell if they are friend, look harder,” Mary yelled.
“It doesn’t work that way, besides they are coated in blood and burns, ashes and soot.”
“Should we check?” Anna asked all of her duplicates stopping and looking at Rick.
“Probably should.”
“Maybe this is why we don’t have a future,” Mary argued grabbing his arm. “Maybe we die because we go and look and they are enemies.”
“We have to at least look!” Tori responded sharply.
“I’ve decided both, and I can’t see either outcome. My sight is either gone or impaired by something.” Rick responded gently. “I’m going to check, it’s what we came her for, to get our friends and to destroy Kennedy. Kennedy’s already down, I’m going to check, and if I die for it... I’m okay with that.”
Mary dropped her hand and Rick started off. Mary and Anna looked at each other for a minute before both shrugged and followed. Hawkeye following close behind them looking over his shoulder every few minutes.
“Oh my god!” Hawkeye dashed in front of them, his legs pumping snow flying up behind him.
“Seems like someone’s figured out how to advance their powers,” Mary complained, the rest of them running far behind trying to catch up.
Thayne was slowly getting to his knees when Hawkeye got to him, “you okay bud?”
“I’ve felt a shit ton better I’ll tell ya that,” Thayne responded as he touched his head, “uh... Hawk... what the hell is stickin’ out of the back of my head.” He slowly turned and Hawkeye gasped. “That bad huh?”
“That is most definitely a steel rod from the buildings structure.”
“What should I do?” Thayne asked, “think I should take it out?”
“Hell no. Just sit down, and don’t fucking move.” Hawkeye turned, “Rick call the Institute, get the Doc!”
“Is everyone else okay?” Thayne asked obliging to Hawkeye’s demands and just sitting down.
Hawkeye grabbed an arm of someone who had landed next to Thayne as he spoke, “what happened.”
“Honestly? Don’t remember much, killing guards, Claire being there, some transmitter thing that screws up the chips... Leon has it. Claire rigged the place to blow. Claire! She was shot!” Thayne put his head in his hands, “how could I have forgotten that?”
Hawkeye turned the person over and found it was Nina, her breathing was soft. “Nina?” He shook her gently not knowing the extent of her injuries. “Nina, come on girl, wake up.”
“We... escaped through a window. Claire put the timer on Nina, so she would know when it would blow. Claire didn’t intend on leaving the building alive.” Thayne continued the story. “We were running, trying to get as far from the building as we could, but we weren’t far enough when it blew, guess it threw us all the way to here.”
The twins finally got there, Rick not far behind and Tori a little behind him. Anna stayed by Nina, “Nina, come on, wake up!”
Mary flipped over Hiro and gasped. “Oh God, oh God!” Hiro had fallen directly onto a sharp rock that had pierced through his rib cage. He kept changing form, a guard, a girl, a boy, an elderly lady, a thug, a famous actor. “Hiro, stop, stop, you need to save strength not waste it!”
“I don’t think he can control it,” Rick responded. As he took off his sweater and pressed it against the wound. He looked to Hiro’s face, each face was pained, eyes rolling back. “This is bad, this is really, really bad.”
“Check out everyone else,” Rick ordered Hawkeye. Hawkeye kept staring, “Hawk!” Rick’s voice was sharp. “Check everyone else.”
Hawkeye nodded and got up and made his way over to the next closest face down body. Though the hair had soot in it, and the lower half was covered by a peice of sheet metal which he flipped off the petite woman, he knew just who it was. “Robyn,” He whispered as he flipped her over. “Robyn, come on, get up.”
She groaned, and tried to sit up, Hawkeye quickly grabbed her and assisted as she fell backward he pulled her to his chest. She looked up at him for the first time. “Hawkeye?” He nodded. “You’re crying.”
“It’s been... a day.”
She reached up meekly and whipped away one of the tears, “I know the feeling.” She slowly started to get to her feet with Hawkeye’s help. He bent down to the next body and Robyn grabbed him pulling him back. “It’s Scott.”
“So?”
“Our powers... with the chips, even not working, we know how to use them better, to their fullest extent. Scott doesn’t only see death now. He creates death, with just a touch.” Robyn informed quickly. “Poke him with a stick.”
“You can’t be serious!”
“As a heart attack,” Robyn responded as she went to get a stick.
Hawkeye went around him carefully. “Oh my god!” Hawkeye turned to see Anna having turned over J.C who had a large gash on her head, half her face soaked in blood. All of the many Anna duplicates were crying, obviously Anna had long since concentrated on controlling them, all of them just mimicking her now. Tori ripped off a piece of her shirt and pressed it against the head wound.
Robyn came back with a thick stick and pried Scott over. His face covered with snow and Robyn grabbed a piece of the Kennedy building to wipe his face off. He went to swat and Robyn jerked away. He sat up quickly and got to his feet even faster he looked around and everyone froze. “Robyn?” She nodded. “Sorry,” he said rubbing his temple, “I didn’t mean to... almost hit you, you know.”
She nodded, “I know.”
He looked around taking in the devastation. Nina finally awake and helping Anna tend to J.C’s head wound. Thayne trying his best not to move an inch with the piece of steel sticking out of his head. Rick trying to stop Hiro’s bleeding.
Hawkeye got to the last body he could see. Leon.
The explosion was magnificent. Cleansing. Beautiful. Deadly.
