Boot Camp For Terribly Twisted Teens [Chapter 42] War Never Is
“Do you even know how to drive?” Tori asked indignantly as she stared at my highly crooked parking job.
“Not really,” I admitted sheepishly.
“Get in the passenger seat.”
“You have your license?” I asked as I did as she asked.
“My learners permit, I went out a few times with...” Tori choked up, “lets just go.” She backed out, cranking the wheel hard to make up for my poor parking and we were going down the street exactly on the speed limit. “So tell me everything.”
I started the story with my being sent to Kennedy Boot Camp, how I met everyone and how I discovered everyone’s abilities. I then went on to tell her about Daniel’s warning and my sneaking from the gyms back to the apartments. Helping to rescue Nina and sending the burning man to hell. I told her about waking up in Kennedy labs, about finding Nick there. I told her where to turn and hurried my story along, told her about Caitlyn and her helping me to get Daniel back in his body.
“I’m glad Danny is okay.” Tori said quietly. “I know how hard that was for you.” I nodded and filled her in on how we intended to strike Kennedy Labs. “I’m in.”
My head turned to her quickly a little surprised. She had a white knuckle grip on the steering wheel, her jaw jutting out her teeth practically grinding together with her seething anger. “Okay,” I said finally. There was no way to keep her out of this. They had taken her parents from her.
After driving for another ten minutes I realized something. “Son of a bitch.”
“What is it?” Tori asked looking at me momentarily then back to the road.
I had been looking out the rear view mirrors most of the trip. “We’re most definitely being followed.”
“They must be the agents that killed my parents,” Tori said, her voice fragmentating in her anger.
“Pull onto this side road.”
Tori looked at me before turning. “We’re going after them?”
“We can’t lead them to the institute, and frankly, why not get some agents out of the way before we strike their base?”
She suddenly e-braked and the car spun around. I opened the glove box and pulled out the gun, and hoped it was loaded, but then again it was dark out, the only lights down this dead end were our headlights. “Tori, turn our lights off.” She didn’t argue she just did.
We both stepped out of the car and begun walking forward. I could tell the people inside were trying to get out of their vehicle. From what I had to told Tori, she seemed to know my gift pretty well. We were in front of their vehicle before the first person jumped out of the side door and Tori kneed the headlight, smashing the bulb. I did the same on my side.
The man pointed a gun at Tori point blank and she grabbed the gun ducking her head and jolting it. The man fell and didn’t make any sign that he was getting back up. I wondered just how many volts she had in her. The driver opened his door and stepped out. I shot him straight in the head blood splattering the entire inside of the vehicle. My heart rate picked up viciously and I felt ill.
Ignoring the feelings, I walked around to Tori since they were all coming out of that door. Tori had dropped another someone shot and the bullet missed my head by maybe an inch. Commanding the heavy shadows I pushed them inside the back where all the rest of the men were pushing and pushing against the other side. I heard crunching, screams, and liquids spilling. When I let go of the shadows the men were horribly fragmented pieces of their former selves. Bones had been crushed flat, the skull was a disk rather than any kind of distinguishing figure.
“Oh my god,” Tori whispered turning around and I could hear her throwing up.
Acidic bile burned at the back of my throat. The blood of the men was oozing from the door of the blocky vehicle. “Lets go,” I said finally.
Tori looked at me, like I was a complete stranger. Back in the car we were quiet, I only spoke when I was telling her were to turn. I’d give her a moment to process. I’d had a while to get use to this horribly twisted life. I needed to give her a chance to get use to it. Especially after what I had done. It was the quickest most efficient way. I could hear their screams in the back of my head and I had my doubts.
I told her the password and she punched it in. The gates of the Carlin institute opened up and we drove my mother’s vehicle back in. The gun felt right in my hands and I didn’t put it back but instead put it in the back of my waistband putting my longer shirt over it.
Staring at the institute I knew I had to tell Janet about Tori. “We keep our mouths shut about what we did tonight,” I said looking to her. She nodded once. “We’re in this together.”
She looked at me, “thank you, for killing them... after what they did to my parents. They didn’t deserve to live.” It was my turn to nod. “You don’t intend on telling your friends about what happened.”
“Rick might already know if he was watching my future. If he went to sleep, he won’t and then neither will anyone else.”
Tori gave a sharp nod and we headed to the doors. I directed her to my mother’s room. Mother was asleep already and I hated waking her up but she ushered us in. I told her about Tori’s parents and she just cried. I told her we drove here immediately before any of Kennedy’s people could follow.
“You should have told me you were going Claire,” mother scolded me. “You could have gotten yourself killed!”
“I can take care of myself,” I said strongly.
“I don’t care what you think you can do,” my mother continued on her vicious attack. “I don’t care! You could have gotten killed or captured! You are so reckless Claire! I now see the side of you your father was talking about.”
“Like you should talk,” I bit back viciously. “You left us, maybe I have a few issues, doesn’t help I’m a freak who can talk or command the dead. Or how about controlling shadows. I don’t know mom, I think that gives me a few reasons to act out a bit!”
“Show Tori the room.” Mother said after staring off with me for a minute. “She must be exhausted.” She turned to Tori, “I’m so sorry for your loss dear, I promise, we will get these Kennedy sons-a-bitches.”
I had Tori to the door before mother said, “we’ll discuss this more later.”
In the room, Tori got into a set of my pajamas and everyone was sleeping soundly. I tucked her into my bed and snuggled in beside her. She cried and I put my hand over her waist and murmured that everything would be okay. I played with her hair gently knowing how much she liked it and she eventually sobbed herself to sleep.
I carefully got out of bed doing my best not to disturb Tori’s sleep. I went to the drawer with my undergarments and moved them off from the top of my mother’s handgun. I touched it briefly before covering it back up.
A question had been worming through my mind for the past while, and I finally went down to see if Dr. Allen was still up. I was surprised to see he was. I knocked lightly on his open door and he jumped. “Didn’t think anyone would be up this late,” he said with a light hearted voice.
“Do you have a gift? Like other than being a wicked awesome doctor?”
Dr. Allen smiled, “yes, I’m like everyone else here, weird.”
I grinned back and he gestured for me to take a seat, I did. “What is it?” I asked.
“I’m an Intune. Precision eyesight, much like your friend Hawkeye, but I’ve learned over my years to accelerate other parts of my body, my legs like your brothers, my arms. I can hear a pin drop in the other wing of this place if I amp up my hearing. I’ve learned to control pretty much all I can with my gifts, but being a doctor, I use my eyesight the most.”
I nodded. “One more thing... do you think the chips can be safely removed?”
“If the brain hasn’t started growing around it, yes, I think they could be taken out, the risk would be high, it is brain surgery after all, but... Claire, I think it is possible, and being frank, I think what the institute is doing is irresponsible. Those kids could be saved, I just know it.” He sighed and ran his hand through his thick hair.
I knew we were going to need him when we brought back our friends, I told him the plan and he listened intensely. “We need you Allen.”
“You’re suggesting we go against the Institute?”
“Absolutely, what they are going to do is wrong, you know it, I know it. Allen... I don’t want to have to be the one to kill my friends. I can’t live with that. I’m doing everything in my weirdo powers to stop this all from happening. I’m going to try and save them.”
“And if you die.”
“I’m not thinking this won’t go with out casualties. Everyone is going of their own free will and understand, we want to stop Kennedy, but we want to bring our friends back safe. If I die, I died for the freedom of my friends. I accept that as a possibility. I’m not afraid.”
Allen and I stared at each other as if a contest of wills would decide his fate. He finally looked away. “I’ll keep it quiet, and if you bring anyone back, I’ll see what I can do. This isn’t going to be pretty.”
I stood and started walking away, “war never is.”
“Do you even know how to drive?” Tori asked indignantly as she stared at my highly crooked parking job.
