Boot Camp For Terribly Twisted Teens [Chapter 40] Bacon and Eggs
When I came to I could smell smoke and gasoline. I knew I hadn’t been out long since I still had feeling in my hands. I coughed and could taste the metallic red liquid that lined my mouth. I tipped my head back and spit. Blood and one of my teeth fell to the ceiling. I turned but Daniel was gone. “Nick?” I looked to the front. He wasn’t moving, the air bag had failed to deploy on his side. Caitlyn was beating her’s down. I knew there was going to be no pleasant way of doing it, so I braced myself with one hand as I undid my seatbelt and I toppled to the ceiling.
“Caitlyn, you okay?”
“Been better, but I’m fine... The seatbelt is jammed though, I can’t get out.”
I could hear a car door open. “Their coming.”
“Go.” Was all she said.
“I can’t leave you two.”
“Well if you don’t, they are going to get all of us!”
She had a point. Still... “Daniel’s missing.”
“Get out Claire. You need to get out of here.”
“Caitlyn.”
“Claire! Go now!”
I got out the back shattered window and realized we’d rolled quite a ways. In front of the vehicle were two soldier looking men and with them was a young woman in a warm looking coat and short brown hair. “Nina...” I whispered. Beside her, standing tall was a bulky male who looked ready to crush something. “Thayne...” my chest ached. My friends. I needed to help them, but knew the time was not now and the place was not here.
I seen blurs around them and in seconds they were all unconscious and in the middle stood Daniel a gun in his hand, the butt of it bloodied. He was in front of me in a second. “Kind of liberating finally showing you what I can do.”
My breath fogged as I exhaled. “Cory can do that to.”
“Beat me to it,” Daniel said with a slight smile.
“I think you’re faster.”
“Desperation.” He responded, “come on we have to get them out of there, the gas canister is busted.” I grabbed a piece of glass and cut Caitlyn loose of her seat belt and sliced open my palm while I was at it. Daniel grabbed Nick but Caitlyn and I dragged the unconscious man to the enemy vehicle since Daniel was feeling light headed. I’d be feeling pretty rough after just waking from a coma too.
Caitlyn took the drivers seat and Daniel fell asleep in the shotgun seat while I tried tending to Nick. His head had a gash and it looked like he broke his nose on the steering wheel. I ripped the bottom of my shirt and tried to stop the bleeding on his arm. It was gushing, and bled through the fabric in less than a minute. “We need to hurry,” I said urgently.
“Driving as fast as I can on these roads!” Caitlyn responded sharply.
Another car was stopped length wise in front of us. It had chains around the tires, and was one of those big vehicles, the real gas guzzlers. “Again!?” I couldn’t believe the shitty luck. A door opened and Rick stepped out along with Dr. Allen and Hawkeye. “Stop the car!” I shouted at Caitlyn. “They’re on our side.”
Dr. Allen went to Nick’s side of the vehicle like he’d already been prepped on who needed help the most. Hawkeye and Rick help Daniel since he was a little weak in the legs now, apparently using his powers in the moment of desperation truly exhausted him. “You were watching us?” I asked Rick.
“Someone has to, and could you have made more impulsive decisions? I was getting whiplash.” I smiled slightly and he cringed. “That’s a lot of blood.”
“Yeah, I’m sure the missing tooth is going to be super sexy with the burns.” I responded sarcastically.
Once we had everyone in the other vehicle Caitlyn took the wheel cautiously since Allen needed to tend to Nick. Hawkeye guided the way back to the Carlin institute and told her the password. We drove in and there were already people there to help. Dr. Allen wheeled in Nick and anyone with injuries were to follow him.
Everyone there was trained with the basics of first aid- other than my friends and I. Daniel leaned against me as we entered and my mother stood there, tears shining in her eyes. “My baby,” mother whispered softly as she came and embraced him gently. “Are you both alright?”
I nodded keeping my bloodied mouth shut. Daniel also nodded wearily. “Just hungry and a little cold.” He said, after all he had been out in a hospital gown.
“Lets get you a nice warm shower and some fresh clothing, then we’ll worry about food.” Mother said guiding him. “Claire you coming?”
I shook my head, “I’m fine,” I murmured as clearly as possible with my mouth closed. My mother looked at me suspiciously but guided Daniel toward the showers. I went to the first aid centre, Janet was taking care of Caitlyn I walked in. “You okay?” I asked her.
She looked up at me, “this wasn’t the life I chose. I didn’t want any of this.” I looked away unable to say anything. “Seems though fate has had enough of my waiting around, of my hiding.” I just nodded.
Dr. Allen came out of the adjoining room my head turned quickly to him. “Nick’s okay, right?”
Allen nodded, “he’ll be fine. His nose was broken, a few stitches needed, minor concussion.” I nodded. “Lets take a look at you.” He flagged me over and I followed him into his office. Nick lay on the bed still unconscious which worried me, but Allen had already assured me he’d be fine. He washed up my hand and bandaged where I had cut myself on glass before taking a look in my mouth. “I have a dentist friend, I’ll give him a call.”
It wasn’t long before Allen’s dentist friend arrived. By then I had already rinsed my mouth out a few times and the bleeding had stopped. Emanuel was the dentist, he fitted me for a fake tooth and was numbing my gums when my mother and Daniel walked in. “Claire!” My mother’s voice rose in pitch but I couldn’t respond I just looked to a cleaned up Daniel and he explained the car accident.
I closed my eyes and listened to my brother’s voice, to my mother, Nick’s soft breathing and Emanuel humming as he worked on putting my fake tooth in. It didn’t take too long but the freezing in my mouth would take a while to come out. During that time though I slept, in a nice room with many beds. Daniel also napped much to the dismay of Cory who wanted him to stay up.
When I awoke, it was the next morning, Hawkeye and Rick were sleeping on the other side of the room. Anna and Mary were talking quietly in their own language as they lay side by side on the same bed. I stepped out of bed and Anna sat up. “There are clean clothes in the closet,” she whispered to me.
“Thanks,” I responded. I opened the closet and found there were new clothing and separators with names on them. I found my name and pulled out a shirt and pair of pants in my size before looking to the dresser beneath and found my name. I pulled open the drawer and found bras and underwear with tags. I checked and they were my size, I had a feeling someone used their brain gifts to figure out everyone’s sizes. I grabbed my things and headed for the shower.
Relaxed and clean I went to the mirror and opened the drawer finding a new toothbrush, a childish looking one with my name on it. I opened it and brushed my teeth carefully. Around where I’d had the new tooth put in was tender and sore. I put on the black skinny jeans and baby blue turtleneck. I pulled back my still black hair, and was surprised that I didn’t have roots yet. Still pulled back it made the burns on my face more prominent. I pulled out the elastic and tried to cover the burns with my hair.
I sighed and left the room throwing my bloody, sweaty, ripped clothing into the trash. Downstairs I decided to check on Nick first. Daniel was there, so was Liam, Nick was awake but none to lively. I went to back out to give them a minute when Nick realized I was there. “Heard you lost a tooth.”
“Yeah, too bad the tooth fairy didn’t come and give me some money,” I responded stepping in the room.
Nick smiled, “I’m glad everyone’s alright.”
I nodded, “I’m going to get some coffee, anyone want any?”
“I think we’ll be there in a minute ourselves,” Liam responded. I nodded and left them.
In the kitchen I found Mom and Caitlyn talking as they waited for coffee. “Good morning.”
“Good morning Claire,” my mother responded giving me a soft smile. “Want bacon and eggs?” I nodded vigorously, I was starving. I sat at the island as mom started cooking. It took a while, but mom made a ton. Everyone gathered around a large table and we all talked about Kennedy as we ate. Something had to be done. Now. We talked plans over bacon and eggs.
I thought of my captured friends. Thayne, J.C, Leon, Scott, Hiro, Nina. And what of Scott and Robyn, were they dead? Tears welled in my eyes as I stared down at my food blinking quickly to rid myself of the tears. I couldn’t think like that. They had to be okay. They had to be.
