Boot Camp For Terribly Twisted Teens [Chapter 39] When Luck Runs Out
We didn’t go back to the Carlin Institute. Caitlyn, Nick and I went directly to the hospital where Daniel was laying in a coma. I didn’t want to get my hopes up to much, Caitlyn had explained to me that even if she got his spirit back into his body there was a change his condition would not change. After all, he had been in a coma for so long. His body might not be able to repair itself.
Still my heart was elated. If there was a chance I could get my brother back, shouldn’t I take it?
We snuck past security. None of us feeling like signing in, or showing our ID’s. Well Caitlyn was actually the only one with one. I still had no license and Nick’s is probably with the Kennedy people.
I knew where Daniel’s room was so they followed me, Nick helping me sneak past the guards. I stepped into the room and shut the door as soon as Caitlyn and Nick were inside. I turned and my heart contracted painfully. Seeing him like that wreaked so much havoc with my emotions it actually was physically painful.
Caitlyn looked around and her eyes locked on me. “You’ve had contact with your brother’s spirit, yes?” I nodded. “He’s attached to you. I can sense it.”
“What does that mean? Does that mean you can’t put him back?”
“It means it would be very difficult. Claire, you need to put your brother back.”
The exhale I gave came from my toes. My wind gone like someone punched me in the stomach. “I don’t know how.”
“But I do,” Caitlyn responded putting her arm over my shoulder and gently guiding me to my brother’s bedside. “I know it hurts, but you have to let him go. Tell him you’re a big girl. Strong and independent. Let him know you don’t need him to watch over you anymore. Tell him he can let go of you.”
I nodded. “Daniel?” I felt a little silly. When I would talk to him, I would see him. His spirit wasn’t appearing. I stepped and touched his physical hand. “Danny, you saved me.” I felt the tears well in my eyes. “And you’ve always been watching over me, saving me from everything you could, but...” My chest was heaving with sobs as I tried to get out what I had to say. “You don’t have to look over me anymore. I’m okay now. I can take care of me. Thank you for all that you have done for me, but... now it’s my turn to take care of you.” I could feel something cold and turned, Daniel’s spirit had placed his hand over mine. “It’s time to go back to your body.”
The door smashed open, and I heard gunshots. I physically, spiritually, and emotionally shoved Daniel into his body out of instinct. I caught bright lights out of my peripheral vision and knew Nick was on fire.
“Son of a bitch!” Caitlyn said bracing herself against the wall. She had no attacking power. Nick caught one of the guards on fire and I knocked one back by clinging to the shadows and shoving them out. “We need to go.”
“I’m not leaving them to take Daniel!” I shouted. “You two go!”
“I”m not leaving you,” Nick snapped back.
I heard a groan and I turned, “Danny?” I gently shook his shoulder. “Daniel? Please, you need to get up!”
“Claire!” I whipped around, one of the Kennedy men had gotten past Nick and was heading right for me. He grabbed my hair and I screamed instinctively. A sound of something shattering and I felt my head become wet. I looked up and seen Caitlyn who’d knocked the guard over the head with a vase. She kicked him in the ribs, and he didn’t move.
“How many of these sons-a-bitches are there?” I asked.
“I really don’t want to find out,” Nick responded.
I turned back to Daniel and unhooked his IV and heart monitor. “Nick! Knock out the lights!” I seen fire crawl up the wall and attack the florescent tubes, I heard them burst and darkness flooded us. “Nick, stop glowing!” Darkness flooded the halls but I could hear them. Shadows were all that existed in the darkness and I shoved them down the hall with all my might. I heard some rustling but could see the faint outline of Nick putting on the long lab coat since his clothing had burned up. “Help me grab Daniel!” I ordered.
Caitlyn grabbed my arm and we all headed blindly down the hallway, Nick catching just his fingertips on fire as we headed to the stairs since they had the back exit.
“Shit, guards are coming,” Nick said after pressing his ear against the door.
“Well we just can’t walk an unconscious patient out the front!” Caitlyn responded.
“I’ll take care of it,” I responded and stepped into the stairwell waiting for them to step into the shadows and when they did, the darkness swirled around their wrists pulling them down another swirl grabbing their throat, choking the life out of them. “Come on!” I’d feel guilt about it later. Right now, all I could feel was elated. How close I was to getting my brother free.
Getting down the stairs in a hurry was a chore, but we did it and busted out the back doors. Snow was covering the ground. Sun high in the sky, snow glistening, a shadow less world. It made me nervous. We got to the vehicle and I jumped in the back with my brother, Nick got in the drivers seat and Caitlyn took shotgun.
We sped out and I tried to awaken my brother. “Come on Danny! Wake up, please...” I vaulted forward my seatbelt locking and bruising across my chest. “What the hell?”
I turned around just in time to see a vehicle ram us a second time, my seatbelt once again locked and jerked me back. “Hold on!” Nick yelled. I started hearing gunshots. “Fuck, fuck, shit God damn it, fuck!” Nick always had a way with words. “Get your heads down!”
We skidded and I grabbed hold of my brother and pushed his head down as I ducked in my seat. “What have you kids got me into!” Caitlyn shouted as the back rained in with glass as bullets pierced the back window.
“Claire?” I looked over to see Daniel’s hazed eyes as he looked over at me. “What the heck is going on?”
“How much do you remember about being in a coma?”
“I was in a coma Claire!” Daniel shouted over the sound of gunfire. “I was unconscious!”
“Kind of.”
“What do you mean kind of?” The vehicle fish tailed and everyone screamed but Nick kept it on the road.
“I’m a necromancer, you latched onto me since the day you were shot.” I responded finally. “There is a lot going on, I’ve seen mom. She’s like me. She can talk to the dead.”
“I think... I think I remember. I thought it was a dream.” A bullet whizzed by in between us and shattered the front windshield. “Shit!” Daniel looked to me. “You were burnt in that gas station bathroom... right?”
“You helped get me out alive,” I responded. It’s a funny thing. Running for your life. You want to get out everything. You want the other person to know things. You want them to know... “I love you.”
He grabbed my hand, “we’re getting out of this.”
There are only so many near death experiences you can have before you start thinking. This one is it. It has to be it. I have to die this time, I’ve eluded death far to many times. My luck has run out. I said nothing though. If he though we would get out alive, who was I to destroy the thought that had him holding on?
I heard one of our tires blow, then another. We slid off the road, I don’t know how many times we rolled. But I do remember hanging up side down, my hands resting softly against the ceiling as the blood rushed to my head. I remember thinking my luck has run out.
