Boot Camp For Terribly Twisted Teens [Chapter 25] Sargent Angelo Royce
We ran behind the burning man, Nick till light started to filter through the trees making light dance along the ground in patterns. “I’ve got to stop,” I muttered exhausted, unlike the rest of them, I was still the weakest, and slowest. I put my hands on my knees coming to a complete stop. Everyone slowed to a stop and I looked up, everyone else looked as tired as I was.
“How deep... do you think... this forest is?” Mary panted as she laid down on the dewy ground.
“Who could... possibly guess that?” Anna muttered back laying down beside her twin.
“I see a stream up ahead,” Hawkeye said, “through the trees, we should at least try to get to it and get a drink. That will be the first place they start looking for us.”
“Lovely,” J.C muttered as she yawned. I feared she would fall asleep, maybe she did to for she stayed standing while everyone else was squatting, sitting or laying down.
“I got to take a leak,” Thayne announced as he walked deeper into the woods.
I looked around, and realized we were missing Nina. Had she gone to the bathroom with out telling anyone? Had she fallen behind? I looked over my shoulder but didn’t see anyone. “Hey guys where is...” I noticed for the first time Leon had fallen asleep against a tree. “Nina.”
“Claire,” Scott came up to me slowly, “she never came out of that room.”
I stared at him for a moment, then realizing what must have happened. “Leon!” I shouted as I stomped over, he looked up as I kicked his side. Rick grabbed me and pulled me back as Leon wheezed and stood on unsteady feet. “You bastard! How could you do that.”
Leon looked puzzled, then looked around, confusion faded to shame. “You wouldn’t have gotten out of there with out her. So...”
“You played with my mind!” I shouted. For those of our group who hadn’t figured out what Leon could do, it seemed it was coming together for them now. “Made me see her come out of that room!”
“You wouldn’t have come with us! You would have gone in their and gotten yourself killed!” Leon shouted back, “I wasn’t just going to let you in there now realizing what Robyn could do, Scott seen us all dying if we stayed in there!”
I wanted to have something to yell back. I couldn’t muster it though, Nina was dead. Robyn was probably tranquillized by now, chained to a metal slab and being kept under lock, key and unconsciousness. I shuddered with the thought and a few tears started sliding down my face. Leon went to hug me but was suddenly thrown back and pinned against the tree.
“You okay miss?”
Leon’s eyes were bugging and his face had paled considerably. “Yes, let him go please.”
“As you wish,” the young soldier, or who I was assuming was a soldier considering the dog tags around his neck and the camo pants, his shirt was white, tight fitting, but dirty and bloody. He turned to me, a large bullet hole in his heart, “what is a girl like you doing in a place like this?” He asked with a smirk and a wink.
I couldn’t help but let out a awkward laugh as I rubbed my eyes of tears. “We are trying to escape these... horrible people.”
He nodded, “I was a prisoner of war once... and only once,” he said poking his bullet hole. He seemed trouble for a minute before looking back up at me.
“What is your name?” I asked him after a moment.
“Sargent Angelo Royce,” he saluted me, “and who might you be lady who can see dead people?”
I frowned, “Claire Keeds.”
“Heh, not a big fan of the seeing the dead huh?”
“No offense, not really, not all of them are as polite as you.”
Angelo smiled, “why thank you. Now you guys should get moving. No more time wasting.”
“Could you help us out?” I asked. Everyone was staring at me, obviously they couldn’t see Angelo, but they knew what I was doing. “We don’t even know where we are.”
Angelo rubbed his chin, “I suppose, but I don’t remember the area, I mean it’s changed a lot since I’ve been shot... but I can lead you to where I was buried, I can hear cars from there.”
“That would be perfect!” I replied with a grin. I couldn’t think of Nina and Robyn right now. I had to worry about getting out of this mess. Worry about getting home, to try to put my life back together, to try and get my brother back together. I turned to my friends, “Angelo here is going to lead us to his grave site, he says he can hear cars from there, it must be close to a road.”
Everyone seemed happy about the idea, and we were back to running once more. My legs ached, but I felt a little better when we stopped at the stream for some water. I wished we had thought of grabbing some kind of container when we were back in the labs to carry drinking water in. I was still the slowest in running, Angelo told me directions which I relayed to everyone else up a head of me, while Angelo ran at my speed, more like jogged, but I could never see his feet, he was more of floating beside me.
“We are almost there,” Angelo said, his voice was getting weaker, “seems it takes work to talk to even someone as gifted as you.”
I would have told him I thought I was cursed, but I refrained. “Thank you for all your help,” I said turning to him as we stopped at his grave site.
“You wouldn’t happen to know how to send a guy on?” Angelo asked.
“I could try,” I said slowly. And I did try. Just nothing came of it. “Maybe you have some unfinished business?”
“Uh... maybe...kinda...” Angelo smiled slightly. “I... I was going to propose to my girl before I was shot... buried here. She never got to have any kind of closure... I was buried with the ring in my pocket.”
“Mary... I have an odd request,” I spoke slowly as I looked over my shoulder.
Mary looked over to Anna and stared at her for a moment before looking at me, “what is it?”
“Could you raise the body from right here?”
“Are you insane?”
“Possibly?” I replied, “doesn’t matter, Angelo has unfinished business, he possibly saved our collective ass by showing us the way, so I’m going to help him. He has a ring in his pocket... I need the ring.”
Mary muttered, “fuck my life,” under her breath before she went completely still and breathed even. Eventually the ground there started shaking and the body came up, mostly skeleton, small bits of flesh still hung on the bone, dressed camo and a white dirty tank top the skeleton stood staring with eyeless sockets.
“I do not look so attractive there,” Angelo said with a discussed look on his fading face.
The corpse started coming toward me and I tried to stay calm, after all Mary was controlling it, the puppeteer. It reached into it’s pants and pulled out a velvet box. I put out my hand and it dropped it before turning around and walking back to the grave laying down on top of the pile of dirt.
“So who is the girls name?” I asked my nose wrinkled from the sent of decay.
“Caitlyn Parker,” Angelo replied. “I’ll stay looking out for you on the other side.”
“Thanks.”
Angelo smiled, “no, thank you Claire.” And with that he was gone.
I turned back to everyone, in the silence I could hear traffic, someone honking, morning rush hour. “Lets go.”
