Boot Camp For Terribly Twisted Teens [Chapter 23] Worst Toga Party Ever
When I was jostled, still aware but unable to move. I couldn’t force my eyes open. I listened to the breathing of many, I tried to speak but no words would take form. The slab I was laying on was cold, and I couldn’t feel any clothing but I felt the light weight cloth on top of my body. Felt icy shackles on my wrists and ankles. I tried to pull on them but my arm wouldn’t respond to my command.
I settled for trying to remember. I could recall the laps that had exhausted me, the sleeping (kind of) in the gym, Daniel telling me Nina was in trouble. My mind was foggy after that. I had left, I vaguely remember running through the chilled air. Did I get to my apartment? Did I save Nina? What was she in danger from?
Something clanged and I let the memories fade and I focussed on the new sounds in the room. There were footsteps... more than one set. I felt something press against my arm, a long needle shoving into my inner arm. Ice filled my veins and the rest of my senses faded.
Nothingness greeted me, held me till I could break free.
Whatever was in the needle was powerful, I couldn’t fully awake, I would eventually get my sense of smell back. Hospital, sterile smelling that made me shiver involuntarily. My mouth was dry and chalky, I’d give anything for some water. A little after I would start feeling the slab under me, which my body temperature had warmed to normal, the shackles too, but they were still uncomfortable and unsettling. Then my hearing would check back in, but all I could hear was breathing, beeping of monitors.
I tried pulling on the shackles but I couldn’t get my arms or legs to move. I wanted to cry but couldn’t. I tried to pry my eyes open but then I would hear the door open. Footsteps moving closer, the press of the needle pressing ice back into my veins and all my work of trying to awaken was lost and I was dragged back down into the darkness.
The pattern repeated over and over till I lost count, I stopped caring.
I could feel the IV in my wrist, it made me wonder how long I was out, how long they would keep me out. I could smell the sterile disinfectant smell again, and I knew the pattern was repeating once again. Then came the dry taste in my mouth, then feeling, then hearing. This time though I managed to move my arm just a little. I pried my eyes open, but there was still only darkness.
Still in the darkness there was a small emergency light that made me able to see the vague outlines of things. I wasn’t the only body in the room. Still they were all completely unconscious as far as I could tell. I tried sitting up, but the shackles made it impossible.
“Clary?”
I immediately knew it was Daniel speaking, not because of his voice since it was very quite and hard to tell due to the cloud that still hung in my head. But his use of my nickname. He was the only one who called me Clary.
“Danny?” I whispered back, it came out croaked and weak.
“I can’t take out the needle since they would notice, but I can pinch the tube.”
“You can’t hold it forever,” I murmured.
“It’s all I can do,” he replied weakly, “I can’t break the shackles, can’t steal the key, what else can I do?”
“Where are my friends?” I whispered, “are those bodies them?”
“Yes, you were all transported here, and kept knocked out, but I think they are all gone for the night.”
I pulled on the shackles, but no avail. “I need out of these.”
“That I can’t do, I can’t pick a lock.” I started to feel for the shadows, it seemed quite easy since the room was dark. Pressed the shadows into the lock and started to mess around till they all broke at once. “How... how did you do that?”
“I can pick locks,” I responded vaguely. I wrapped the sheet around me as I sat up and tucked it in making a makeshift dress.
“What if they see you up on the video surveillance?”
“They think we are right doped up for the night, and unless they have night vision, they won’t be able to see.”
“Can you continue to stay visible?”
“No I have to go back soon, it takes a lot of energy to interact with things that are real, I’ve been holding that tube for a long while waiting for the effects to wear off you.”
“Okay, its fine.”
“No it isn’t,” his voice was weak and fading, “I should be able to help you more.”
“Don’t worry about it,” I responded with more panic than I cared to admit I was feeling, as I walked over to the next slab. I could scarcely make out a short haircut with strong feminine cheekbones who I immediately realized was Nina. I pulled out the tubes in her arms, “I’ll be fine once they wake up.”
“Be careful Clary,” and then he was gone.
Oddly I felt more safe with a ghost figure in the room than when he was gone. Now left alone with my unconscious friends I was freaking out at every little sound as I made my way around pulling the tubes out of everyone’s arms. Not even bothering anymore to look who they were.
I heard shackles moving and I quickly moved to Nina, the first who I had pulled the tubes from, but she was still unresponsive. I pivoted, “hello?”
“Claire?”
I let out a breath of relief, “Thayne! Are you okay.”
“Uh... I think so?” He responded, I followed his gruff voice and used my powers to pick the locks. He sat up. “How... what is going on?”
“Daniel helped block the drug on me and then I used the shadows to pick the locks. Don’t ask how that works, I don’t know.” I let out a breath of relief as I hugged him tightly, which he responded warmly to. “I’m so glad you’re okay.”
“Are you okay?” He responded as I drew away and turned around as he stood and wrapped the sheet around his waist.
“I’ve been better, I... I just want to get out of here.”
We both turned as someone started coughing, it was distinctly feminine. “Anna?”
“Sorry to disappoint...” Mary responded, or at least I deducted that it had to be Mary since it wasn’t Anna. Their voices so similar. “Were the hell are we? What happened to Anna, I can’t hear her!” Panic was edged into her voice.
“She’s probably still under the influence of the drug.” I responded walking over to her. This time instead of using my powers, Thayne used his muscles to break the shackles that held her.
Mary immediately went to her sister across the room. Not even looking at the others, she automatically sensed where her sister was and sat on the slab next to her sister.
“This is insane,” I whispered lightly. “Where are we? Why did they bring us here? How can they get away with this. So many of us missing?”
I could vaguely make out Thayne shrugging his broad shoulders. Most of our families don’t care.
“Mine...” I whispered. Dad was the one to send me to this place, but his intentions were good right? He was going to come back for me? Right? He couldn’t not... Cory would be with out siblings. One dead and one just... disappeared. I swallowed back a gulp of fear and heard Nina cry out.
Thayne broke her shackles as well and politely turned around as she wrapped the blanket around her tiny frame. We were starting to look like a poor toga party.
Shackles started clicking and before long Thayne and I were releasing Leon, Anna, Scott, Hawkeye, and J.C who all awoke around the same time.
We waited for Robyn, Hiro, Rick to awaken.
Hiro was next to awaken and he was right full of questions. Most of them for me. What the hell had gone on. I told him I didn’t remember, which was true. Wether suppressed or the drug I didn’t know. All I knew was that whatever happened after running to my building I couldn’t remember.
Next was Rick, who awoke freaking out. “Get out! Get out!”
“Rick, Rick, it’s okay!” I whispered brushing back some of his hair, “it’s going to be fine. We are all here, we are going to get out together.”
“NO! Get out now!” He screamed panicked.
“Rick what’s going on?”
“Robyn!”
Suddenly I heard Robyn thrashing then the shackles gave way in a metallic crunch.
“Rick what’s going to happen.”
I heard Scott scream, “oh god... we are all going to die.”
