Dusk .::Chapter 21::. Explanations
Hayden’s father, Paul shifted he looked over to his wife Lilian before looking back to his son. “Put some clothing on, jeez, what is this a nudist colony?”
“Humour,” Hayden replied, “Don’t really care about it right now.”
Paul nodded, “lets get dressed, then I’ll explain.”
Hayden found that his mother was using his clothing for a bed, and so he got fresh clothing from his drawer and found his father making a fire in the livingroom. “Should I wake Harmony?” Hayden asked.
“No,” Paul responded, “I’ll tell her another time. Let her rest, she needs it.”
“So... what the hell happened tonight?”
Paul sighed, “all ages of a werewolf, there is someone to whom you share a great bond with. If you have children, it goes to the child of the same sex. If you are married, it would go to your significant other, and as a child, it would go to your parent of the same sex.”
“I still don’t get it.”
“The bond... is complicated. It allows easier telepathic conversations, a sharper sense of smell when it comes to the one who shares the bond. Unfortunately, when one wolf gets injured, so does the other.”
“Harmony and I have fought in our wolf forms before, and I never seen you or mom get hurt.”
“Like I said, it’s complicated.” Paul responded. “For the most part, when one wolf with the bond is in wolf form, so is the other. It’s why it’s with the same sex- the moon phase forced shifts. While both are in wolf form, only one gets injured, and the other can defend against the attacker with higher degree of strength, agility, and hell, anger.” Paul sighed, “but since your mother went alone, and Harmony was in wolf form, she got hurt. Instinctual transference. Your mother in the attack transferred the injuries to the only person she could, your sister. Not on purpose, but by instinct.”
“So that she could continue to fight.”
Paul nodded and poked the fire with an iron rod. “No one has been attacked in years on this land.” They lived by a huge forest, many wolves lived near by and everyone bought up the forest land so they could have a safe place to run.
“It couldn’t have been a vampire,” Hayden said remembering the teeth marks on Harmony’s leg. “It was another werewolf.”
Paul nodded twice, “seems that one of our own has either gone rogue, or has some kind of vendetta against our kind. Perhaps tomorrow your mother can give more insight.” He looked to his son, weary, that’s what he looked like, dark rings around his eyes, eyes that watched over his sister and mother carefully. “Get some rest Hayden.”
After a moment Hayden nodded and slowly walked to his room.
Paul leaned down by his wife and pet her coat his hand touching blood. Someone would pay for this.

Maverick watched Aerabella hang. Hours ago she’d either given up trying to break the lock around her neck, or she simply didn’t have the energy to keep her arms upright any longer. Her body swayed slightly, but only because Maverick had given her a bit of a push. He checked his watch when it beeped, “oh shucks, I got to see your friend Scarlet.” He looked into her eyes as he said and could see the recognition in her eyes. “You and your brain working,” Maverick smiled, “see you later,” he kissed her hand and let it sway as he dropped it before exiting her cage. He looked over his shoulder and admired his work for a second.
Sighing he walked down the corridor and unlocked the another cage and stepped in, Scarlet was bound, standing, by both wrists and ankles, she jerked against the restraints, screamed, spat. Maverick wiped his face and backhanded the girl leaving a bright red mark on her face. A smack that would have killed a human. “Could you just behave, just once?” Maverick rolled his eyes and took out a needle from his pocket. He stabbed it into a small vile, “your body will heal eventually from this, see this liquid is an acid. It eats and burns, but your body will heal, just not very fast since you have more venom than blood running through your system.”
Scarlet tried to jerk away and he could see fear and pain written all over her face, “just what I like to see,” he remarked grabbing a fist full of hair and pulling her head back before pushing the needle into her eye causing a inhuman howl to escape her lips. He pushed on the end and the liquid begun filling her eye. Anguish, he could see, a smile formed on his lips.
His beeper went off and he sighed looking at it. “My work is never done. Don’t worry Miss Balisa, I’ll be back to play with you again later.”
Slamming the door but still listening to the symphony of screams down the hallway he had a slight spring in his step as he approached the elevator doors. It opened and in came Calum with an elderly looking male, but Maverick knew him, he was even older than he looked. “Have his orders come down?” Calum asked.
Maverick checked the fax and pulled out a slip of paper, “Gary, Gary, Gary,” he wagged a finger, “you’ve been down here more than most men. You and your infant killing.” He looked to Calum who looked about ready to kill the man himself. “Would you like a turn Calum?” Maverick asked taking Gary from his arms, “I’m sure you’ll enjoy yourself.”
“I do not get kicks out of torturing others.” Calum responded hotly. “How long will he be down here.”
Maverick smiled, “One century.” Gary tried to get away but Maverick twisted his arm and Gary let out a cry. “One century with me. Again. Jeez, I think you must really like me Gary, keep coming down here, either that or you got some kind of fetish.” Maverick pondered this silently for a second. “If they enjoy torture, is it really a punishment?” He asked Calum.
Calum shrugged, “just starve him, I guess.”
“Well that’s kind of boring.” Maverick decided, “would you like to see what I’ve done with your little friend Aerabella?”
“No,” Calum responded hotly before turning on his heal and pressing the button for the elevator.
“She’s just hanging out...” Maverick laughed at his own joke. He noted the way Calum’s back stiffened through his expensive tux. “Get it?” he asked as the doors opened and Calum stepped in and the doors closed once more.
“He’s so boring,” Maverick said to Gary still twisting his arm as he lead him down the corridor. “Lame, lame, lame.” He bit down on Gary’s neck as they entered an empty cell and he gulped down the vampire’s blood he stepped back and spat, “Garlic? Really?” Maverick shook his head.
“I’m not stayin’ here a century!” Gary responded hotly before making a run for the door. Maverick caught him by the neck and slammed him into the floor.
“Your absolutely right Gary, I ain’t putting up with this shit for a century.” He dragged him into the furthest cell back and knocked his head against the cement as he grabbed stake from the wall. “You’re going to die instead. No parole for you.”
“No! Please! I take it back!” Gary responded “I’ll do anything you-“
His words were cut off when Maverick stabbed the stake through the human heart. “Too bad buddy, you only got one.” He pulled him off the wall, stake and all and threw him into a pit. Humming he grabbed a can of gasoline pouring it onto Gary’s body before lighting a match and starting the fire. “Who would have turned that sack of shit?” Maverick wondered out loud.

Vivian pulled her long hair into a ponytail as she commenced painting in the new house. Fall was leaving, slowly, but leaving, she could feel winters coming in her bones. She exhaled and dipped the brush back into paint. “She’s fine,” she told herself, her voice little more than a whisper.
But for a second, she couldn’t breathe.
