Dusk .::Chapter 14::. Boy Trouble
I spent the rest of the day and well into the night trying to figure out how to tell my father that the elder’s granddaughter was using mind control on a human. I wandered into the kitchen where Mom was packing up all of the kitchen utensils. “The move is soon,” she said quietly. “There is still so much to do.”
“We’ll get it all done,” I assured her. “Mom... I need some advice.”
“Oh, is it boy trouble?” She sounded excited. Neither Angelique or I have had very interesting love lives to speak of.
I thought about it for a second. “Kind of... not exactly though. The trouble involves a boy, but not a boy with me.”
Vivian looked at me and sat on top of the counter in a quick graceful movement. “Is it about Calum?”
That wasn’t the topic I was aiming for, but while I had my mother’s attention, and her eyes were sparkling like she’d been waiting for me to bring it up. She and father heard about everything, she probably heard through the grapevine he’d visited me and wanted to hear the story from the source.
“Yeah, sure.” I decided, I’d just have to go to father with the whole ‘Scarlet is mind controlling a human’ thing.
Mom studied me and then kissed me on top of the head, “Calum is a mysterious man.”
I nodded. “He just... he came out of no where!” My shoulders slump. “He just, comes into my life for a second and then walks right back out just as easy and leaves me... frazzled, and off balanced for days.” I look down at my socks and rub an imaginary spot from the floor. “Then he leaves for a real long time,” I whisper.
Mom leaves a light kiss on top of my head, “he’s lives ahead sweetheart. He’s busy, he’s the grandson of an elder.”
“Then why does he do this! Why does he come and bring colour and... life to me and then just... leave.” I end angrily, and cross my arms over my chest.
Mom sighs and her shoulders fall too, “I don’t know sweety, I just don’t know.”
I ended up going right past my father’s office down into the basement and into my room. I took off my socks and laid down in my coffin shutting the lid to it. Darkness, complete and utter darkness. Why did I let a boy... man... do this to me? Let me feel like this. I rub my temples. I do this every time he leaves. I get worked up, decide I never want to speak to him again, and then the anger fades while he’s gone and all I can do is sit waiting for him to return.
“This is ridiculous.”
“What that you’re in your coffin before seven?” I can hear Tobias’s voice say and I open the lid and shoot a glare at him.
“I’m not sleeping.”
“Oh God! Is it boy trouble?” He looks around as if he was looking for a place to take shelter from the bomb.
“Two cases of it.”
Tobias sobered up and stared at me, maybe there was something in my eyes, but he sighed and slumped into his coffin, knees over the edge swinging his feet side to side. “Anyone I should pay a visit to?”
I shook my head, “it’s nothing like that Toby... I haven’t told dad yet, but Marlowe and I suspect that Scarlet is using mind control on a boy to make him be her boyfriend.”
Tobias sat back, “well, since when does Scarlet need mind control to get a guy? She’s hot, she’s sexy and she’s manipulative as hell.”
I waited for the edge of disturbia faded. “Please don’t refer to my friends as hot and or sexy. It’s weird.”
“That’s only one count.”
“Calum came back one dance,” I could feel my throat closing in anger and tears flood to my eyes, “one dance and then, just... left. Again.”
“Men are good at that,” Angelique said as she came in with her books and out of three of us was the only one who bothered to turn on the light. She carried school binders, textbooks and a dictionary. “Calum is a great guy, he’s just lives ahead of you, I’m sure when you catch up it will be different.”
“Who says I won’t be fed up with all this by then!” I nearly yell at her. “There are other guys out there.”
“Ethan you mean?” Angelique dropped down beside Tobias and set her books down on his lap like he was a table. “He’s a fleshie,” she popped up a finger. “He’s not as good looking as Calum,” another finger. “He doesn’t have the social standing Calum does,” another finger. “And he’s with Scarlet,” another finger. “He will die and you wont.” She held her hand up and wagged all the fingers with points. “He’s not worth your time, Calum is. He’s like five lives ahead of you, maybe more, he’s waiting for you to play catch up. You’re still practically a child, I mean, you’re still in high school, it probably looks bad enough as it is that he’s totally into you.”
I kicked my feet, “you think so?”
“Wow, this is more girl talk than I can take,” Tobias throws the books back on Angelique’s lap and blurs as he exits.
“Sissy,” Angelique mutters before standing. “And yes, it’s what I think. He’s letting you know he’s interested, but not putting pressures of being the elder’s grandsons’ girlfriend.”
“And if I fall for someone else.”
Angelique seemed to ponder this for a long moment before smiling, “it would be interesting to see.”
I left my room, and Angelique with Algebra homework and went to my father’s office. I knocked quietly and he looked up through the open door. “Hey, I’m just finishing up a Covenant report for the Elders, take a seat Aerabella.” I sat down and wrung my fingers my two hearts hammering away nervously, Dad looked up at me and studied me for a minute, I swallowed hard. “Aries, what’s wrong?”
“If you thought someone, a vampire, was using mind control on a human... what would you do?”
My dad sat back in his chair and sighed, “a vampire... as in one of your friends.” I bit my lip and Michael cursed. “Which one?” I looked away. “Marlowe?”
“No!” I cried out, “she was the one who pointed it out to me.”
Dad rubbed his temples. “Just tell me who it was Aerabella.”
“What would you do?”
“About it?” I nodded. “I’d report the infraction to the Elders and they would dictate what punishment would be fitting.”
“What if the Elders wouldn’t do anything.”
“I’m sure they” he paused looking at me and then sighed, “Scarlet?”
I nodded sadly, “and a human boy in my gym class, his name is Ethan.”
“I’ll have to report it.”
“Do you think they will do anything.”
“Probably, they don’t want their children or grandchildren to be embarrassing them or their family names.”
“What will they do?”
“Honey, you let the Elders and Covenant worry about that, thank you for telling me.”
I nod, “I feel bad though, telling on her.”
“She’s a spoiled child, perhaps this is for the best, we can’t have anyone going rogue.”
“Scarlet? Rogue, she wouldn’t.”
“Most of the vampire’s I’ve know that have turned rogue are just like Scarlet.” He shrugged, “but it’s not definitive. What happens, will happen. You should get some rest.”
I knew I was being dismissed, he probably had to fit this into his report to the elders. I kissed him on the cheek, “good night dad.”
“Goodnight Aerabella, I love you.”
“Love you too dad.”
I tried to sleep. I laid in my coffin, the lid closed. All I could think about was Scarlet, if she got punished... would she know it was me who ratted? Scarlet was my friend... more or less. She was someone you wanted on your good side that’s for sure. My stomach did a sick turn. “I have a bad feeling about this,” I whispered to myself as I stared down the darkness.
