Dusk .::Chapter 13::. Control
My father wasn’t pleased when I told him about the humans ending up in attendance. Part of me had just wanted to keep my mouth shut, but my father being covenant leader would surely end up hearing about it through the grape vine, and it was better he heard it from me.
Wolfgang wouldn’t talk to me. He stared at me when I had returned to the hot tub and has been avoiding me since. I keep calling his phone, I went to all of his usual hang outs. I eventually called Hayden’s house, but Harmony answered instead. “I’m sure it’s nothing,” she assured me. I wasn’t so sure.
I rubbed the back of my neck trying to work out the tension as I walked to school with my sister. “What are you fretting over now?” She asked me in a bored tone. I looked over to her, her dark locks waving in the wind, she looked like a model. “You worried you didn’t do a clean wipe?”
“Hmmm what?” I shook my head.
“Are you worried you didn’t completely manage to wipe Ethan’s memories?” She asked with sympathetic eyes.
“No, well, I hadn’t been... now I am, thanks.”
She gave a casual shrug of her light shoulders, “anytime. If that wasn’t it, what was it?”
“Wolfgang has been acting... weird around me.”
“He’s a,” she took a moment to look around and deciding we were alone enough she continued, “werewolf. They are the definition of strange.”
I rolled my eyes, “they aren’t that much different than we are.”
“Wrong! They are so different, I mean, ew, they turn in to mutts.”
“Wolves are not mutts!” I scolded, but my sister didn’t share the same opinion as I. She got along well enough with the werewolves, but she didn’t make a point to be friends with them. I adjusted my backpack as we approached the school, I could see Marlowe’s hair, but her face was hidden by Faust.
Angelique’s grin touched her eyes, “oh my god!”
All I could manage was a, “huh.”
“You didn’t know?”
“No, well they were a little friendly in the hot tub, but I mean, they’re both flirts.”
“Well now they’re a little more than that,” Angelique said with a wink before she hurried off to her friends.
I didn’t know what to do, should I go and say hi to them, or stay back. I decided to just walk to the school but Marlowe had turned around and grabbed me by the arm before hooking her arm around mine. “Check it, we’re dating now,” she poked Faust in the stomach and he just shook his head.
“Should I leave you girls alone.”
“Yes, I do need to discuss this with my lovely lady Aries.” Faust gave her a quick peck on the cheek before taking the side entrance to the school. “So, your thoughts?”
“I can’t believe you’re dating Faust.”
“He’s so hot.”
“That’s nothing new, I mean he asked you out two years ago, you said no.”
“That was... different.” Marlowe tested the word on her tongue. “I mean, he was different, I was different, and I was dating that college human boy. I mean, come on he was in college. Big deal for a high school girl.”
“He was a total loser.”
“Well I didn’t care, he was in college Aries. College.”
“The human girls are positively buzzing.” I jumped as Zakia spoke falling into stride beside me. I placed my hand on my right heart it thrummed away under my fingertips. “Hearing Faust’s off the market has broken some hearts.”
“What no boys buzzing,” Marlowe quipped.
“Oh they keep saying something about a hot red head, but they could just as easily be talking about Scarlet.”
Marlowe released my arm so she could cross hers over her chest. “She’s not even seeing anyone.”
Zakia gave a knowing smile and opened the door to the school. Once inside my ears rang, so many people talking at once. I sighed and fought the urge to cover my ears, I seen Marlowe’s face squinch up in pain before she forced it flat. I could see Scarlet’s blood red hair and I stepped up to her, seeing her beside Ethan, both smiling and holding hands. Marlowe touched my hand, “I thought he liked you.”
I shrugged, “its fine. I don’t care. He’s just a fleshie.” I hugged my books. I couldn’t tell if I was lying to Marlowe or telling the truth. It had felt nice knowing someone was interested in me that way. Then again, I had enough to deal with; Wolfgang was still mad at me about something, Calum left me completely confused since the party, and I had to attend a human school. I didn’t need hormones to come into play. This was for the best. They looked good together. They looked happy. I was happy for them.
“Well, at least he doesn’t seem to remember anything from yesterday, and any male in his right mind would surely remember you in a bikini.” Marlowe noted as we walked to art class. “A clean wipe, good job.”
Art class came and went, English did to, with out anything really interesting happening. At lunch Scarlet sat with us for a change, her arm around Ethan, Duke and Kaleb sitting with us too, neither of them remembering the night before.
“So how did you two end up together?” Marlowe asked Ethan and Scarlet. “I mean, I didn’t see you guys together at all before today.”
Scarlet smiled, “oh we met up on Saturday night. We just started talking, and well,” she gave a shrug, “here we are now.”
“Yeah, really, what time Saturday night, cause we were all at your party.”
“I left for a bit.”
“Mmh,” Marlowe responded taking a bit out of an apple. She glared at Scarlet who only smiled.
When we got to Sociology I sat between Marlowe and Jacques. “What was that all about?” I whispered keeping my head down at my paper.
“Are you guys thinking she bit him, altered his memories after you did, and is now dating a fleshie under false pretenses?” Marlowe asked bitterly, “or is that just me.”
“That’s dangerous, she was intoxicated Saturday,” I responded.
Marlowe glared at me, “she probably did it yesterday while you were telling your father about it, and I was nursing a wicked hangover.”
“Why would she do this though?”
Marlowe looked at me sadly, “you really are dense aren’t you.” She patted my shoulder. “Remember first grade, you had the newest collectable Barbie doll, and she just had to have it so next day she had one just like yours. Or perhaps remember in grade five when you got the newest music player, and she just had to have it, and you actually gave her yours. Or in grade eight when you got that knockout designer gown, and she had to return her dress and get one she deemed better than yours, or when.”
“Enough, I get it, Scarlet has to have everything I do.”
“You’re a covenant leaders daughter, she’s a granddaughter of an elder. She absolutely has to have everything the very best, she has to have everything better than those below her. And honey, you’re not below many, but Elders and their family, you are.”
“I don’t understand why she took Ethan though, I wasn’t interested in him.”
Marlowe looked at me sadly, “you were. Just a little bit. He livened up this dead high school for you, he was something you feared and yet kind of got excited about, and now he’s under mind control.”
“It’s not fair.”
“You could go to your father about it.”
“And say what? Scarlet stole a guy I liked.”
Marlowe smiled, “see, I knew you liked him.”
My forehead crinkled, “shut up.”
“Point is, mind control is only supose to be used to hide our identity, or to get us something to sustain our life. Right? We aren’t supose to use it to make people juggle or jump of buildings, or make them fall in love with us against their will. It’s against the rules, and if you don’t feel comfortable going to council with it, I will. It’s wrong Aries, you and I both know it.”
“She’s the granddaughter of an elder,” Jacques finally spoke. “If you think you can get the council to rule against her, you’re wrong. She’ll let go of Ethan when she gets bored of him anyways, which knowing Scarlet, that won’t take long.”
My lips pressed into a hard line. Both Marlowe and Jacques was right, this needed to be taken to council, even though I was sure I’d loose. “I’ll talk to dad about it, see what he says.”
