Dusk .::Chapter 10::. Diamond Clasp
I did see Ethan again in Gym. Boys versus girls in dodge ball, which I would have been pretty upset about had I have been a fleshie. The boys pegged the slower girls quickly and held all six of the balls again waiting. I dodged as one was thrown at me, and eventually they all laid on our side. They flew back and forth till it was only Marlowe, myself and a few other female vampires from our school. We each picked up one of the balls. Ethan and Duke were on the other side as well as a few other familiar St Viktor’s faces.
“Three,” one girl called.
“Two,” another called and we all released on that call, the guys caught off guard. The fallen females cheered as we got out three, Duke being one of them.
The game continued till it was Marlowe and I versus Ethan and a vampire. Four of the balls on our side, two on theirs. I threw one at another ball and deflected it. The vampire bent to get a ball and Marlowe hit him in the back. Marlowe and I each picked up a ball and Ethan just grinned as we both hit him.
“Girls win!” The girls started cheering and the guys booed.
We got showered and changed into street clothing. I grabbed a hair elastic and whirled it around my hair securing it into a bun. “Bells?” Marlowe called and I turned to her from the mirror. “You going to Scarlet’s soiree?”
I shrugged, “I suppose so.”
Marlowe pulled her shirt out of her gym locker and pulled it over her head and ran a hand through her dark red hair. I studied her, her forehead crinkled in critical thought. “I’m always up for a good time and all but... she was handing out invites right in front of...” she took the moment to look around the change rooms, most girls were having their own conversations, fixing their makeup with their compact mirrors. She came over to where I was standing and spoke quickly and quietly, “the fleshies. Did you see the look on Kayleb’s face? He gave up the attempts to find the party way to fast don’t cha think?”
“Maybe he just didn’t give a damn about a snooty rich girl’s party?” I suggested.
Marlowe’s lips pressed into a hard line, “maybe.” She turned and grabbed her bag, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Bye.”
The weekend came quickly, Ethan, Kayleb and Duke had sat with us at lunch, I didn’t approve much. It felt to awkward being around humans. I fluttered around my room in my silk nightgown, Angelique flipping through a magazine laying on her coffin, her legs drooping over the sides. “I’m jealous, Scarlet’s parties are legendary.”
“It’s really no big deal,” I reply grabbing a black dress from my closet, after all it was a black tie affair.
“If it wasn’t, you wouldn’t be going. You either feel obligated, or you think it will be fun.”
I drew a breath before putting the black dress back, and pulling out a long draping silver dress. “A bit of both.”
“You shouldn’t feel obligated toward Scarlet,” Angelique scolds. “She’s not an elder.”
“Yet,” I reply letting my housecoat slip off of me. “But it’s in her blood. It’s best to have someone like her as an ally.” I step into the silver silk and pull it up cupping my chest, “can you get the back.”
Angelique sighs but I hear her climb from her wooden box and step lightly behind me. She does the top clasp and pulls the laces up the back crossing over tightly. “Can you still breathe?”
“It’s not really mandatory for us anyway,” I reply and she snorts.
She turns me around as it’s done up and inspects me. “You should wear the diamond clip Calum gave you.”
I bite my lip, “no, no it’s too special.”
“You’re one of those people who are going to live a ridiculously long time but be to afraid of everything to actually live.”
I stared blankly at my little sister as she went to the drawer on the underside of my coffin, invisible if you didn’t know where to look. She wedged her nails in and pulled the small drawer open. She knew that’s where I kept everything I found to be truly important. She pulled out the clasp and shut the drawer again. “Wear it.” I take it from her slender fingers and she pulls back my hair gently holding it in place and I hand her the clasp which she secures into place. “Stop being afraid of shadows Aerabella.”
There was a tap at the door and Angelique whisked it open. There stood Wolfgang, Hayden and a disgruntled looking Skyler. Wolfgang wolf-whistled, which I decided it was smart to made no smart remark about. Hayden gave a slight smile. “Where you headed sweetheart,” Wolfgang asked stepping into my room and circling me like I was his prey.
“To a party at Scarlet’s.”
“Ah, lucky you.”
“Why are you here?”
“What I can’t come and visit you?” Wolfgang asked, hugging me tightly and nuzzling into my neck.
“Is it mating season again or something?” I ask pushing him away slightly.
Hayden snickered and Wolfgang shot a glare his way. “No, it’s not. And you smell nice.”
“Uh... yeah, thanks?” I looked to Hayden, “where’s Harmony?”
“Hunting.”
“Ah.”
“You need a ride to the party?” Wolfgang asks me unable to keep his eyes on my face. I grab his chin and force him to look away from my chest.
“Yes, actually, that would be beneficial, but you’re not intending to crash it are you?”
“Us?” Wolfgang looked to his two best friends, “crash a party?” He gave a dismissal gesture. “Never, would we boys.” Neither Skyler or Hayden answered him and he glared. “You’re not helping our cause.”
“So that’s why you came to visit me,” I tisked him. “Here I was thinking you just missed me.”
“Well I wouldn’t want to miss a chance to see you all dressed up like this,” Wolfgang’s eyes drifted over my body again.
“Well, you came, you saw, and now I’m going to talk my brother into taking me.” I retort crossing my arms over my chest. “Out you go now.”
“Aw come on sweetheart.”
“Out, I still have to do my make up, out, out.” I shove him and in his human form had little ability to fight back.
He looked back and his face dropped, “where did you get that?”
“What?”
“The do-dad in you hair.”
“Not like it’s any of your business, but Calum got it for me last year for Christmas.”
“Calum? The guy who’s like lives ahead of you?”
“Yes, and it’s not like lives really make a difference, now out you go. I’ll see you boys later.”
“You look lovely,” Hayden whispered to me before leaving and I smiled.
“I don’t know how you put up with wolves.” Angelique noted from her position in her coffin. “So rambunctious. They don’t truly understand us. Not like other vampires do.”
