Dusk .::Chapter 09::. Invites
Kayleb had jet black hair, intense eyes in such a dark shade of brown they nearly looked black. He stood taller than Marlowe and I but was the shortest of the three boys broad shoulders a black leather jacket, he looked every bit the bad boy type. Duke looked like the stereotypical surfer guy. Shoulder length blonde waves, bright blue eyes, sharp cheek bones, a rope necklace with colourful beads. A light blue shirt and faded loose and baggy blue jeans. Ethan’s short cropped black hair was messy and semi spiked, his bright green eyes were on me and I felt nervous. He was like the median between Kayleb and Duke. He wore black jeans and a grey t-shirt.
“The line is moving,” he informed me and I turned from him to find it had moved a good few spots. I quickly turned and huddled close to Marlowe who was chatting up Kayleb. I ordered a wrap, a chocolate chip cookie and an iced tea. Marlowe took the liberties of introducing everyone before we sat down.
“Zakia, that’s a peculiar name,” Duke says staring at the beautiful amazon woman.
“Maybe it is because I’m black.”
Duke nearly choked, “I didn’t mean, I just...”
Faust snickered, “she’s just fucking with you dude.”
“Really?”
Zakia kept a dead pan face. “Yes, I’m just fucking with you.”
Duke swallowed hard, I seen his adam’s apple bob. “Oh... okay?’
I couldn’t help but chuckle, Zakia was an intimidating woman, and her sense of humour didn’t always show through. Say for now, she could laugh, or at least smile, but she was thoroughly entertained and yet was managing to keep a completely straight face.
“So, what do you guys do around here for fun?” Ingrid asked staring directly at Kayleb he looked up at her even though he hadn’t been paying much attention, I’d bet any money she was rubbing a leg against his.
“I thought St. Viktor’s students were locals.”
“We live most of the time at the boarding school,” Jacques response shining a green apple, “we only spend summers here.”
“Oh, well, there are a couple of all ages clubs, sports, video games,” Kayleb shrugged.
“So what is St. Viktor’s like Aerabella?” I looked up shocked to be singled out. I was fine with my own friends, but new people got me all fidgety and nervous. Ethan smiled at me, “I’ve just always been curious.”
I shrug, “it’s okay.”
Faust laughed loudly gathering attention, Jacques snickered, Marlowe looked like she pitied me and Ingrid sighed before speaking, “I’m sorry, Aries is the shyest kid I’ve ever met. It’s down right pitiful.”
“Watch who you’re throwing that word at.” I looked over to see Scarlet standing over Ingrid. Ingrid scowled, but said nothing. You might not like Scarlet, but in our world, she’s someone that must be respected. “Aries, introduce me,” she ordered sitting next to me.
“Scarlet, this... this is Ethan, Duke and Kayleb.”
“Pleasure to meet you,” Scarlet smiled. “Marlowe, how have you been.”
“Well,” Marlowe responded quickly. “But I’m sure you didn’t come over here just to get Aries to introduce you.”
“No I didn’t,” Scarlet retorted. Before pulling a package of invites out of her purse. “Throwing a little shindig this weekend, needed to hand out the invites.”
“Where this party at?” Kayleb asked with a smirk.
Scarlet grinned, “oh sweetheart, you’ll never find out.”
Kayleb’s grin dropped, and he looked confused, like it was the first time ever he’d been rejected while flirting.
Scarlet pulled out the invites passed one to Marlowe, Jacques, Faust, Ingrid and myself. “It’s BYOB,” she said with a secret smile.
Ingrid opens her card, “no effing way.”
Scarlet stood flipping through more invites and looking around for the rest of the people invited. “Yes effing way,” she responds before leaving.
Kayleb goes to look at Ingrid’s invite but she quickly pulls it back. “Sorry, this is a St. Vic’s only soiree, very private.”
“So you St. Vic’s kids, you get together for parties all the time?” Kayleb asks.
Ingrid shrugs, “we understand each other.”
“What am I speaking another language?”
“Our classes are small,” Jacques interferes. “Most of our classmates are also in our social circle. Besides, Scarlet comes from a prominent family, she’s not just going to let anyone into her social circle much less her house.”
Kayleb smirks, “that’s just fine.” He looks over at Duke and Ethan then back to us, “just fine.”
We start walking to our next class and Ethan stops me, “you never really answered me.”
“Yes I did.”
“It’s okay, is not what it’s like.”
I shrug, “nothing special or worth talking about. I need to get to class.” I move away slowly as not to be to fast or hurt his hand with speed. “I’ll see you in gym, I guess.”
“Wow, first full sentence.”
I open my mouth but find no witty comment so I turn and go to class.
