Dusk .::Chapter 04::. Mysterious Necking
Wolfgang asked me to dance and I took his arm as he lead me into the pit of people dancing. Despite us being quite far underground, with all the dancing, the place was becoming warmer. The music was too loud allow comfortable conversation this close to the stage, so Wolfgang and I just danced. More and more people started dancing, bodies moving, jumping, and swaying to thrumming music that controlled the beating of my two hearts.
“Thought I might find you here,” I turned to see it was Marlowe who was yelling in my ear. Marlowe had been my best friend since her parents joined my father’s Covenant when I was six. Looking at her, I could see excitement glinting in her bright baby blue eyes, her red hair was choppy and wild, I looked at her attire, black leather pants, knee high boots, and a flowing crimson top. “Hey Wolf,” she said with a smile for Wolfgang.
“Hey Maree,” he responded grinning back. “Thought you didn’t come her anymore.”
Marlowe shrugged, “nothing better to do on a Friday night. Besides, seems like they’ve got that human problem resolved.” Humans had been known to come to the Ashnite Mines, problem was, we just let them be, and they tended to enjoy it, telling their friends and coming back. I don’t know what became of them, wether vampires bit the humans and told them to forget all about the place, or if it were some of the older werewolves that just intimidated them away. Either way, it seemed to be just a vampire/werewolf social tonight.
He nodded and seemed distracted as he looked off, “I’ll catch you guys later.” He said before slithering through the crowds. Marlowe took his spot in front of me and as we danced we yelled loudly to get our point across.
“What was that all about?” Marlowe shouted.
I shrugged, “probably a girl caught his eye.”
Marlowe laughed loudly, “the pup’s on the hunt!”
I giggled too.
The music was very good. A few bands played, mostly rock music, and a few screamo bands. I covered my highly sensitive ears as one started shrieking into the microphone. Marlowe did the same, her eyes squinted and her head bowed. “Son of a bitch,” she cursed grinding her teeth together. They were promptly booed off the stage and left in a huff.
A band started to do a cover of the Monster Mash, and I couldn’t help but laugh and sing along. “I was working in the lab, late on night, my eyes beheld a eerie sight, for my monster from his slab began to rise, and suddenly, to my surprise, he did the mash!” Marlowe and I danced close swaying and singing all of the words to the silly Halloween song.
We took a break from dancing when it was over and I followed Marlowe as she made her way over to one of the flashing red lights that sat on top of the kegs. Marlowe paid up and the wolf working the station passed her a red plastic cup. She took a sip and offered me some but I declined, “Mrs. Williams still not letting you drink?”
I shook my head, “I can understand why though.”
“Because vampires don’t handle alcohol well?” Marlowe asked. “Whatever, it just means we don’t have to pay as much as the wolves do to get the same buzz. Anyways, you only have your first life once,” she said with a mischievous grin as she chugged back the beer. “Woo!”
“Hey you two!” I turned to see Harmony step up, “have you seen Hayden? I seemed to have gotten split up from him.”
“Maybe he’s with a girl,” Marlowe singsonged drunkenly. One beer and she’s already tipsy.
Harmony bit her bottom lip, “perhaps.” She turned around and tried looking for him again. “Whatever, he’ll find me eventually. Has a better nose than I do,” she said with a determined nod. “Anyways, why is she drinking? You vamps are terrible drinkers! Why is that anyway?” I shrugged, there was lots about our kind that had no real explanation, this was one of those things.
A new song started, more of a pop beat, and Marlowe started to air guitar. “Lets dance!” She shouted. I spent the remainder of the night dancing with Marlowe and Harmony. The bands started to pack up their equipment. People started looking around for those they came with.
“How did you get here?” I finally asked Marlowe.
She leaned heavily on me, and I could smell the alcohol on her. “Hitched a ride with Faust,” she responded sleepily as she rubbed her eye with the arm that wasn’t around my shoulder. We were in the same grade with Faust, friends sure, but we didn’t hang out much.
“There you girls are,” I looked over my shoulder to see Wolfgang jog up to us, “where are Skyler and Hayden?”
“Haven’t seen either all night,” I responded, and Harmony shrugged.
“I want to nap,” Marlowe decided suddenly dropping like a stone and taking me down with her. She laid back on the cool stone floor as I struggled back to my feet dusting my butt off.
“Does she have a ride home?”
“She came here with Faust, but I don’t see him around.” Looking at Wolfgang I seen his hair was messier than normal, a bright red lipstick on his neck and breath caught in my throat. “Harmony watch Maree for me.” I grabbed Wolfgang’s arm and pulled him out of earshot. I looked back to see Harmony trying to get Marlowe to her feet again. “Who bit you?” I asked sharply.
“What?” Wolfgang grinned, “I wasn’t bitten by anyone.”
“The teeth marks haven’t healed yet,” I responded crossing my arms over my chest.
“I wasn’t bitten, Aries, jeez, jealous?”
I opened my mouth but bit my tongue, taking a few calming breaths in through my mouth as not to smell the blood. Finally I spoke. “Fine, who were you making out with then?”
“Who?” I nodded. “There was more than one,” he wiggled his eyebrows, and I sighed exasperated.
“Wolfgang, I can see the rows of teeth still indented in your neck so stop lying to me, you were bitten. Who bit you?” Mostly a little necking with the opposite species was taboo, and therefore my generation wanted to do it. I didn’t like the idea that someone might be able to get into his head.
“Aries, you’re nuts. I wasn’t bitten.”
I raised my hand to his neck and drew back putting my hand in his face. Lipstick and blood smeared on my hand. “Who bit you?”
He touched his neck and then looked puzzled at his hand. “I have no idea.”
My hand trembled and I wiped it on his shirt before taking a few steps back. “I have to get Marlowe.”
