Dusk .::Chapter 03::. Ashnite Mines
I was pulling on my brown leather boots when Wolfgang knocked on the door. “Come in,” I yelled as I zipped up the left boot and grabbed the right one. Wolfgang opened the door and took a step inside, shutting the door behind him. “Hey, you got the rest of your posse?”
Wolfgang laughed, “posse?”
“Do you prefer, do you have the rest of your gang, Wolf?”
“Damn, she’s fiery tonight,” he said to no one, leaning against the wall with a smile as he watched me. I looked up at him as I fiddled with my right boot. Wearing ripped up blue jeans, a tight fitting band t-shirt and a black leather jacket with shining gold zippers, his black hair fell nearly to his strong jaw line, he’d developed a five o’clock shadow on his chin he’d been proud of. His dark brown eyes met mine and I looked back down at my boots.
“Evening Wolfgang.” I stood up straight and Wolfgang looked surprised at my mother’s sudden arrival in the entrance way.
Wolfgang pushed away from the wall quickly, and gave my mother a smile, “evening Mrs. Williams.”
She stepped forward and embraced me tightly kissing me on the cheek before stepping back. She looked directly at Wolfgang with a look that could freeze the fires of hell, “you look after my baby girl and bring her home safe before two am.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Wolfgang replied quickly.
Mother looked at me. “You have your cell phone?” I nodded. “Have fun then, and be safe.”
I stepped out into the hot August air. “Jeez how can you wear that jacket?” I asked fanning myself.
“Better than a fur coat,” Wolfgang said with a wink and I laughed.
We walked across my short yard, yay suburbia. In Wolfgang’s mom’s station wagon I seen Skyler had taken shotgun. I climbed in the back and seen the twins Harmony and Hayden. “Hey Aries!” Harmony, who’d been sitting in the middle quickly hugged me. “I haven’t seen you in forever.”
I laughed, “we went shopping two weeks ago together.”
“For-ev-er,” She emphasised and looked to her twin. “Two weeks is like forever, right?” Hayden rolled his eyes and went back to looking out the window, Harmony laughed.
The behaviour of the twins was typical. Though they look very similar, same light chocolate brown locks, Harmony’s in a jaw line bob with soft wispy bangs, and Hayden’s in a brown shag slightly shorter than his sister. If you looked close enough, you’d find that their hazel eyes were exactly the same, though Hayden always has his eyelids covering most of his eyes, permanently squinting. They stood nearly the same height, Hayden being two inches taller, and they were typically the same size standing next to each other due to Harmony’s shoe addiction.
Their clothing styles clashed though. Harmony had on a bright yellow flower in her hair, and a yellow and white printed feminine dress with white stilettos. Hayden wore a pair of dark washed jeans that had grease stains on them the knees faded and looked about ready to tear, a plain blue t-shirt and sneakers.
I didn’t bother saying anything to Skyler. The two of us had never gotten along. His family wasn’t particularly fond of Vampires for reason’s I hadn’t been made aware of. We were both Wolfgang’s best friends, and so we tolerated each other.
The car ride took about an hour, getting out of the city, out into a small mining town, though the mine had been shut down nearly seventy years ago. We drove down the back roads and parked in the old employee lot before jumping out. We locked the doors before shutting them and heading into the woods.
“Harms?” Harmony hummed at my voice acknowledging that she had heard me. “You heard of any of the bands we’re going to see?” I asked her as we walked through the woods toward the fence. It was fairly easy to navigate, there were trails for nature enthusiasts. They hadn’t intended it for a bunch of teenagers to use it to sneak off into the mines and party.
“I heard of one of them,” she said before letting out a shrill sound as her heal caught and she fell forward.
Hayden caught her quickly and steadied her, they looked to each other for a moment, silent words passing between them and then looked away. Wolves. We walked along the fence line till we hit the old oak tree that instead of leaves, had shoes. Hundreds of shoes, tied at their laces and thrown up it.
We turned at that point and looked for the hole in the bottom of the fence. I pulled up on the bottom, it was already partially curled from people using this way earlier. Hayden went under first and silently, Harmony went next, her brother helping pull her through. Skyler went next, and I heard his flesh rip on the sharp bottom fence edges. I could smell the blood coming to the surface and could see it glinting in the pale moonlight. I felt my second rows of teeth piercing through the back part of my gums. Skyler’s tan face went pale.
I dropped the fence on his torso and turned away from him. Heard the fence move and knew it was Wolfgang helping his friend. “Aerabella?”
I inhaled deeply trying to calm myself when Wolfgang came around I shut my mouth quickly and looked down. I’d never let him see my second row of teeth, he’d never let me see him as a wolf. We keep our realities hidden unless necessary. Those are the times we are in.
“Aries?” He whispered, “do you need space?” I shook my head and he hugged me close to his body and I could smell the musk of his cologne. He ran a hand through my hair the other rested on the small of my back. “Are you not feeding?” He whispered again.
“She okay?” Harmony asked, her honey laced voice soft and sweet.
“She’s a vampire,” Skyler said as if he were really saying ‘of course she’s not okay.’ “She was going to bite me.”
“She wouldn’t bite you.” I heard Hayden say finally. I’m always surprised when I hear him speak since he doesn’t talk often, and after a while, you start to think it will sound like his sisters, soft and sweet. His voice is more like tumbled gravel, hard and rough, husky.
“Oh no, I must have been mistaken, vampires don’t drink blood. I mean, I must not have seen that second row of teeth, a trick of the moon light.” I looked over my shoulder to glare at him. “What? You going to deny you didn’t just think about jumping me.”
I hissed, “I have standards.”
“We’re going to miss the bands,” Harmony whispered.
“You’re right,” I said pulling away from Wolfgang. “Lets get going.”
Wolfgang held the fence up for me so I could shimmy under, Hayden grabbing me under the arms and pulling me out carefully. Wolfgang struggled under and took the longest to get through. “We should have just jumped it,” he said angrily as we seen another group of kids get to the fence.
“Might be seen,” Hayden responded starkly.
We walked for about ten minutes before we got to the mine entrance. The sign above the entrance was faded and worn, as was the sign that use to say something about hard hats. Stepping in, I found it getting cooler the further we went in. Someone had plugged in the old lights to a generator and had them running lighting the way. We paid our five dollar entrance fee and followed the music down the tunnels.
“Wow,” I said my jaw dropping. A stage had been made, decorated, and lit. Kegs had red twirling lights on top, towers of red plastic cups right beside. “Incredible, I can’t believe they finally upgraded this place!”
“About damn time,” Harmony responded. “Want a drink?” I shook my head and she shrugged and walked off, her brother following close behind.
“Sky? You been talking to Tessa?” Wolfgang asked as more people arrived, the early comers were already dancing getting the floor warmed up.
“I don’t want to talk about Tessa.” Skyler responded harshly. “Better off with out that one.”
“Who’s Tessa?” I whispered up at Wolfgang who stood a good foot taller than me.
“Tessa is none of your damned business,” Skyler responded getting into my face immediately.
I threw my hands up. “I’m not the one starting fights here okay? I was just asking.”
“You were sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong.”
“Get out of her face mutt.” I turned to see Scarlet. If there was ever a vampire that truly embodied the true essence of what we are, it has to be Scarlet. Drop dead gorgeous, though I’m not sure what Scarlet’s natural hair colour is, it’s always been a perfectly dyed fire engin red. She was wearing a strapless black dress that frilled out in layers at the bottom. Porcelain pale skin, bright red lipstick and piercing baby blue eyes. Power and prestige, a great grand daughter of one of the seven elders. She didn’t particularly dislike werewolves, only when they went against her, though that could be said about anyone, werewolf or not.
Skyler turned and glared, “watch who you’re calling mutt, filthy parasite.”
“Nice to see we aren’t above racism,” I muttered crossing my arms over my chest.
“I just have your back,” Scarlet said looking down at me, “but what are you doing hanging out with these inbred pups.”
“That’s over the line,” I hissed.
Scarlet threw her hands up and sashayed away, “just trying to help.”
I turned to Wolfgang and Skyler, “sorry about her, she thinks she’s the damn queen of the vampires.”
“Whatever, I’m going to get a drink,” Skyler said before stalking off.
“Great start to the night, whatdaya think?” Wolfgang asked with false enthusiasm.
“Bloody brilliant,” I grumbled back.
