Chapter 5
Everything Settles
The weeks that followed seemed like a routine. We walked together, we as in Xavier and I, everyday. We got closer and closer. Christmas came by, then January, and February. I don’t regret the fun times at Xavier’s, hanging out with Rose and their parents. I found out the names of the two older boys. They’re their older brothers, Ellery and Ethan.
The only thing that worries me is the closer Xavier and I get, the more I realize more of him. Like how his eyelashes aren’t heavy but aren’t light, and they’re not too long either. Like his face structure, you can point out his bones, but he’s not disgustingly skinny. When he smirks, his eyes narrow a little, as if challenging. If he’s about to ask something that takes a lot of effort, like ‘Do you wanna go to the movies?’ he blushes lightly and smiles distantly. When he’s worried, his mouth makes a perfect frown.
I don’t really care either that this girl named Samantha seems to stick to us lately either…I don’t. And I don’t care how she’s learning to make Xavier laugh like I do. It’d be stupid if I cared about that kind of things. She isn’t all that pretty anyways…okay that was mean.
Anyways, she’s gotten clingy to Xavier, taking his hand in public when I’m with him. She gives me looks when Xavier brushes hair out of my face for me or smiles at me unexpectedly even holds my hand. But what’s really getting annoying is her following us to the movies, or the mall, or even my house. I haven’t been able to vent to anyone about this. Anna already shares my feelings; she might even have them more powerful. So if I even mention Samantha she blows up. And Jess, she’s just floating away. She says she always has plans, and is too busy to do anything. Every time I call she’s either not there, or is just leaving the house.
But, let’s get back to the present. Xavier’s birthday is just two days away, and Rose and I are planning a surprise party at my house. Mom and Dad love them, so they’re pretty excited. Mom’s gotten bigger.
~0~0~
“Okay so we have everything, except the cake, and ice cream.” I told Rose eying our list.
“I still don’t understand why we need ice cream.” Rose said.
We were currently in my room. I was on my computer chair and Rose was lying upside down on my bed.
“Because Rose, cake can never be completed with out ice cream.”
“Yes it can.”
“Have you ever asked your brother this?”
“Nope.”
“Well, I have. And he says there always has to be ice cream, next to his cake. ”
“Ew, even better reason not too.”
“It is his birthday. You don’t have to eat it that way.”
“Okay, okay.” She finally agreed. “I’m buying the cake while you’re at school that day.”
“Make sure it’s marble cake, and has vanilla frosting on top. But add a pink flower for fun.”
“Okay, okay. Jeez, you’re like his wife or something.” Rose complained getting up from my bed.
“Something like that.” I said smiling. Rose has been saying that ever since we decided to have this party. But I guess I would be saying that too if she knew more about my brother than me.
But the truth is, Xavier and I don’t have a romantic relationship. It may seem that way to other people, but nope. But I have to admit, sometimes it seems like it, and I like it. Like when he grabs my hand for no reason, I lose my hand in his. I like that; it seems my hand was sculpted for his.
“I’ll see you tomorrow so we can go to Wal-Mart, and order the cake.” I told her bringing her downstairs.
We found Xavier asleep on the living room couch. I looked at his face, and I mean really looked. Don’t worry, I didn’t crouch down next to him until Rose whispered, “I’ll come back for him later.” And closed the door behind her.
I took timid steps toward the couch. We were home alone. Jaiden was out with a girl, Mom, Dad and Shanny out buying baby things. I didn’t realize he was here, he must have snuck in.
I chuckled quietly as I took the last step. My heart suddenly started pounding in my chest, as I looked down at Xavier. His features seemed to soften and relax. There wasn’t a smirk on his face, or that thinking look.
I found myself leaning down to him. My breath coming softer and softer, almost caressing his face. I didn’t realize what I was doing until our lips were less than centimeters away. And that is when Xavier opened his eyes.
My hair was like a curtain for our faces, but inside those curtains was something special. My heart stopped completely when I really noticed what just happened. Yet, I couldn’t pull away. Xavier and I looked at each other, and then Xavier finished the job. Yes, our lips met.
It wasn’t like any thing I’ve ever felt before. If I could sing, I would. I pulled my self-closer to Xavier, trying to make this feel better if I could. Sparks were flying through my body, something I loved the feeling of.
We broke apart for air. I couldn’t believe what just happened. Xavier and I, Xavier and I just kissed. I looked into his eyes to see his reaction. His eyes were bright with happiness and excitement. I laughed at the thought of my eyes the exact replica of his. Xavier looked at me questioningly, but then laughed along with me. Our laughs mixed in a sweet way. I guess you could call it, Our Laughing Music. Wow, that was corny.
After that Xavier and I had to touch in someway. When we got off the couch, our fingers were entwined. When I was cooking, his hands on my waist, I was casually brushing my fingers on his hand. When we sat to eat, our feet and legs were touching.
We stayed entangled together on the couch. But when Xavier’s curfew came, it was weird. We were just standing at the doorway, holding one hand each. It looked like we were just shaking hands.
I looked at him, hoping he would make the first move. But he looked at me, I guess thinking the same thing. I sighed, and leaned up to kiss him on the cheek. He saw this, and turned his head to it was a peck on the lips.
I smirked, as did he. And this time he made the first move. This kiss was softer, and more on the safe side than our first. It warmed my body up. My mother found us like that.
She made that ‘Ahem’ sound. But instead of a stern look on her face, it was glowing. I could feel a dopey smile on my face, Xavier’s even dopier.
“Hello, Angela.” Xavier greeted my mother, his voice gleeful. “Sorry, but I’ve got to run.”
“Oh, so soon?” My mother asked, just as gleefully.
“Sorry.” Then he looked at me. “See you tomorrow.” He gave me a peck on the cheek, and waved one last time at my mother. He had an extra bounce to his step.
My mother wanted details.
It was like something I’ve never experienced before. Kisses that gave me feeling I adored- and trust me, I’ve had my fare share of kisses.
Now, people accepting us- that’s another story. My mother is obviously ecstatic that we are together. Jaiden and Dad, not so much. Dad was also a witness of Xavier and I kissing. He thought we would just stay friends. Jaiden was very angry to hear this. He came home to see me humming, and moving around the house, in my own little world. He had to throw a pillow at me, and when I just laughed and smiled at him, he asked Dad. Dad was pretty grumbled in telling the story.
“I think you’re too young to date.” Jaiden growled, “Kissing is a whole other story.”
I only stuck my tongue, thinking of the next time I could kiss him. Maybe tomorrow, when we walk together, I thought to myself. I was happier.
“I’m going to sleep.” I announced.
I slept peacefully that night; my yellow-eyed stranger didn’t appear. In the morning I was still in a good mood, just a little deflated. I hadn’t seen Xavier in a while now. I ate breakfast, and made sure I was pretty. Jaiden glared at me.
When it was time to go, I winked at Jaiden, and said my goodbyes. When I walked outside, I could feel my mood brighten. He was there waiting for me. He offered his hand when he saw me. I took hurriedly, and he laughed at me. I smacked his arm, and we kissed good morning.
I sang loudly, and as obnoxiously as I could as we walked to school. I wanted to test him, and his timing.
“La, la, la, la, la-” I sang over and over, in the Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star tune.
Xavier put his mouth over mine and waited till I responded, to pull away. He put his hand over my mouth. “Now, will you please shut up?” He asked breathlessly.
I nodded slowly, wishing he would kiss me again. But he let go of my hand and mouth, and continued walking. I started pouting, I couldn’t feel that electrical effect.
“I hope you know,” I told him.
“Know what?” He asked.
“That you smell.” I said childishly.
“No I don’t.” He began to argue.
“Yeah, you do.” I argued back.
“Nu-uh.”
“Uh-huh.”
“You smell bad.”
“I never said you smelt bad!” I exclaimed. Maybe my Victoria Secret body spray isn’t working!
“Dude, chill out.” Xavier said waiting for me, when I stopped to sniff myself.
“You first.” I challenged.
“I am perfectly fine.”
“Liar.”
“Ugh.” Xavier said, burying his head into my shoulder, and wrapping his arms around my waist, “Why are you so argumentative?”
“Isn’t it obvious?” I asked, touching his hair.
“Why then?”
“Because, I am.” I said simply, and began walking again.
“Hold it, hold it, hold it.” Xavier called after me.
I started running to get away from him. He was shocked, but started running after me. I started laughing when I saw the school up ahead. I ran faster trying to reach it before him. But as I was going to make it, Xavier grabbed from the waist.
I started laughing hysterically, without any breath. Xavier was laughing as well, and our laughter sang together.
“Okay, okay.” I said defeated, “I’m going to die if I don’t get a breath.”
“Well, it is your fault. You started running first.” Xavier accused me, he had a little more breath then I did.
“Whatever, your still a jerk.” I accused right back, gaining my breath. We continued walking, and held hands.
“How?!”
“You made me run.”
“Oh no, not again!”
“Oh yes aga-” But I didn’t get to finish. Xavier tackled me to the ground, but I landed safely on my back, and he on top of me.
“You’re being argumentative, again!” He sang to me, his breath on my face.
“I told you, it's because-” This time, he kissed me to cut me off. I kissed him back, fully into it.
I felt someone nudge me with their foot. I groaned in protest. Then they nudged Xavier, and he attempted to swat the away. I deepened the kiss until I heard Anna say,
“Really? PDA much?”
I pulled away from Xavier for breath. “I hate you.” I whined at Anna, “No one was supposed to be watching.”
“Good luck with that, stupid’s.” Anna said.
Xavier got off the ground, and helped me up. “Morning Anna!” Xavier greeted her cheerfully.
“Seriously, I leave you guys alone for one day, and this happens.” She exclaims. I grinned widely, and grabbed Xavier’s hand.
“Just so you know, warning bell rang.” Anna continued. “So we should hurry up.”
I nodded and let Anna and Xavier lead me to our homeroom. It was silent as we entered. Every pair of eyes was locked on Xavier and my fingers intertwined. I blushed lightly, and found Jess’s eyes. She slightly widened them in question, I smiled for an answer. She gave a slight nod, and dug back into her book.
We got to out seats, but everyone was still staring. I tried to ignore them, but I got squirmy. I began to tap my foot and fingers, on the desk and floor. That is until Anna stepped on one foot, Jess the other. And Xavier had his arm on my shoulder. I smiled sheepishly to my desk, and put my head down. I could still feel the eyes on me!
I was saved from doing something drastic, when Mr. Moore came in. Anna, Jess, and Xavier could feel me relax. They all let go, and I stopped fidgeting. Mr. Moore did attendance, and the bell ring.
We al got up, and I gave a relieved sigh. Xavier looped an arm around my waist, and loosened up against him. Anna and Jess gave us looks.
“You guys have to explain.” Jess said.
“That’s probably what the whole school’s thinking.” I said, then I looked at him, “We should broadcast it on the intercom.”
“No thanks.” Xavier said pulling me along to our next class. There I got a wave of new glares. I was a little less fidgety then homeroom, but still fidgety. When the teacher called on me, I even stuttered.
But that went on for most of the day. The highlight of the school day was after cooking class-the class Xavier and I didn’t have together. I walked out looking left and right in the hallway. I figured his class came out later, so I headed for my locker. But halfway there, someone was waiting for me.
“I can’t believe you.” Samantha growled at me.
“What?” I asked with a sigh. All day her glares were the fiercest saying, just you wait.
“Don’t act all innocent.” She growled fiercer, as a group began to form. “You stole my boyfriend!”
“I’m pretty sure he wasn’t.” I said honestly.
She got flustered, “Obviously- not yet!”
“Then I don’t see why you’re getting all mad.” I said rolling my eyes. “Now, if you’ll excuse me.”
Before I knew what was happening, I was pulled behind someone, and Anna had Samantha’s wrist. I was shocked that it happened so fast. It was like, blink and you'll miss it.
“I’d appreciate it, if you’d try not to hit my girlfriend.” Xavier growled. I was behind him, and Anna nodded in agreement.
“Or I’d have to do something to you.” Anna said calmly, tightening her grip on Samantha's wrist for affect.
Samantha nodded quickly, tears coming to her eyes. Xavier grabbed my hand and led me away to my locker. I finally understood what was going on, especially when we made it to my locker.
“Did she touch you before?” Xavier asked urgently.
“No.” I answered.
Xavier still checked my body over for any sign that she did something to me.
“I’m fine.” I said to him, holding his face in my hands. I caressed his cheeks with my thumbs. Then, I gave him a long soft kiss to prove it. “Now, let’s go home.”
I led him outside, oblivious to the people staring. Xavier still had a worried expression on as we walked.
“Are you positive you are okay?” He asked once more.
“Absolutely.” I said giving his hand a squeeze. “Are you?”
Xavier gave a frustrated sigh. “I will be.”
We continued walking, and my mind drifted away to vent. This was our first walk home as a real couple. But in the first day there had to be drama. I couldn’t kiss him without someone watching us.
“Your house or mine?” I asked Xavier.
Xavier smirked. “It depends, are there people at your house.”
I smiled, “Yes there is.”
“My house it is then.”
After some more walking we approached my house. I went inside to announce where I would be for the next couple of hours. Mom was happy and told my to stay out as long as I wanted, and Jaiden complained he didn’t want to be an uncle yet.
I went back outside to Xavier. He had his thinking face on. I tried not to show my discomfort of his thinking. I hated that look for some reason. He just gets lost in own thoughts. Maybe I’m just being selfish…
I thought he would snap out of it as we got closer to his house, but he didn’t. So I did something I never got to do before. I led him into the woods, but not very far in. I put him against a tree, and looped my arms around his neck. Then I kissed him deeply. He kissed me back almost instantly. We made out- I guess you could call it that- for quite a while. When I came up for air I asked him breathlessly,
“Now, what was it you were thinking about?”
“Well…the thing is m brothers are coming tomorrow. And I was thinking that you could finally meet them.” Xavier lied easily.
“I'll play along with you. What time are they coming to tomorrow?”
“Around 8 AM, so I get to hang out with them for like five minutes before going to school.”
We started walking again, this time talking and making fun of each other. When we got to his house Jen-Xavier’s mom- fed us, and we went into Xavier’s room.
Instead of Xavier teaching me new games, we cuddled together on his bed. We basically just looked at each other. Sure we occasionally poked or kissed, but that isn’t very important. I fell asleep first.
My sleep was interrupted by hands poking my side, and my head. I could tell it was two separate people. I groaned in protest, and swatted them away. I took Xavier’s blankets and covered my head. The hands went to Xavier and he copied me. Under the covers he kissed my head, and gave me a squeeze. That is, until the blankets were taken off us.
I gave a very loud groan of protest that Xavier joined into. I snuggled deeper into him, trying to keep our warmth. I heard chuckles I didn’t recognize.
“Wow, Rose was right.” Said a deep voice.
“They’re like joined at the hip.” Said another voice not as deep.
“Yeah Xavier, didn’t you miss us?” Sang the first voice.
“We came early to meet you Marianna!” Sang the second.
“Well I don’t like you guys.” I grumbled. “Jerks.”
“Yeah, why couldn’t you guys jus come tomorrow?” Xavier grumbled as well.
“Well don’t you guys make us feel loved?” The first voice said sarcastically.
I opened my eyes to see the boys from the photos. One was a bit buffer than the other, but either way they looked alike. I looked at them closer.
“You guys from the pictures. Ethan and Ellery right?” I asked them.
The buffer one smirked and offered me his hand, “Ethan.”
I pulled away a bit from Xavier and shook his hand. “Marianna.”
I shook Ellery’s hand as well. “Nice to meet you.” He said.
I opened my mouth to say something, when Xavier pulled me against him, and glared at his brothers. “Now that you guys know each other, can you two go away?”
Ethan sat down on the bed to pat Xavier on the head. “Nope little bro, we need you and Rose needs Marianna.”
“Oh! I forgot!” I said jumping out of Xavier’s arms. I rushed to get my shoes on. “Where is she?”
“In her car, waiting for you.” Ellery told me.
I thanked them, kissed Xavier quickly, saying I’d be back soon. I had almost forgotten that tomorrow is Xavier’s birthday.
~0~0~
When I got back to Xavier’s house Ellery was sitting on the couch watching television. He greeted me with a smile.
“My brother said he’d wait for you in his room.” I told me before I asked.
“Thanks.” I said, and went to Xavier’s room.
Xavier was on his bed staring at the ceiling. I took my shoes off and climbed in next to him. He turned his head and pouted at me.
“You left me to be eaten.” He accused me.
“Nu-uh.” I said.
“Uh-huh. They’re animals!”
“What they’d do to you?”
“They attacked me about you! They even punched me repeatedly!” Xavier said with wide eyes.
I tried not to laugh as I said, “Well I’ll go talk to them.”
I left the room to the living room. I gave a high-five both Ethan and Ellery. Then the three of us started laughing. Xavier came in and cracked a smile.
“Jerks.” Was all he said, and sat on the couch.
